The Ice Cream Man?

Posted by Columbo
March 18, 2008

We spotted this truck at 11th & G on Monday afternoon. The truck was parked right next to the hot dog vendor on the same corner. The truck was playing It’s a Small World (turn down your speakers) which was reason enough to not investigate further. Anyone ever seen this in the neighborhood before? Ever bought any dogs or ice cream from this thing?

I saw one near U st (or maybe a little bit north) on Sunday. I couldn’t believe my eyes. I haven’t seen an ice cream truck since I was a kid in California.

The chic (iron?) bars over the serving window make me think this must be the urban model of the Smileysoft ice cream truck.

I loved it when the Good Humor truck would come by my childhood neighborhood. Always got the push pops or the vanilla cream.

Yup, last summer I bought a custard cone, right near starbucks off 7th on F street.

The electronic tunes they play drive me up the wall. What happened to the old bells the icecream trucks used to chime? Ching-ching-ching and you knew the icecream truck was coming. Now they play some damned Casio keyboard ditty that drives me up the wall. It makes me want to huck a brick through the windshield, not buy icecream.

I imagine it’s the same icecream the Mall vendor trucks sell. Can’t wait for summer to arrive and the first Bingo Bomb, Nutty Buddy, and Strawberry Shortcake icecream.

Last summer I always saw them around the Navy Yard, where I work.

They’re constantly up in Shaw. They seem to do the most business out front of Lincoln-Westmoreland at 7th and R.

You’ve got to wonder the extent to which escalated gas prices have eaten into this industry’s profits :)

There used to be a couple of really beat-up ice cream trucks in Columbia Heights. When I heard the bell, I’d grab some cash and run as fast as I could out of our condo to hopefully score some softserve of dubious quality.
Of course now that Carvel and Rita’s are open, with Maggie Moos on the way, they’ve disappeared. I hope Giffords on E Street is doing well!

My husband and I used to live in Columbia Heights before moving to PQ. Our townhome was right on the corner and the beat up ice cream truck used to come about 5 to 6 times a day up until about 10pm at night and park right on the corner in front of our home. All the kids in the neighborhood used to gather on the corner to purchase and eat their ice cream, and leave all of their trash all over the sidewalks and street corner. We where contantly picking up trash everyday. So the sound of the ice cream truck coming only make me think of loud kids and a lot of trash to pick up….

I always wanted ice cream from the ice cream truck when I was little. Oh how the kids teased me. “You got no ice cream … you got no ic cream … you can’t afford it … cause you’re on the welfare … Want a lick? Psyche!”

I saw one on 14th Street on Saturday as I was walking to Columbia Heights!

I love the bars.

When I was growing up the ice cream man lived next store!
