Update: Bar Louie/Proof
We did a quick walk by of Bar Louie and Proof and they both are now “unwrapped” (the brown paper covering the glass walls has been removed) but still unopen. The good news is that they both have furniture in place, however, Bar Louie looks closer to opening.

Has there been any news on what’s going in next to the former Juan Valdez? The “space available” signs have been down for a while, and this weekend the windows were completely covered.
The space next to Juan Valdez is the Capital Fringe box office and artist lounge. The space might be built out as a performance area, too. Douglas Development has donated the space to Cap Fringe, as that building is supposed to have an arts component to is (as planned by the city and original Penn Quarter development committee).
The space will be open for tickets a few days before the Fringe festival — happening all over town, but concentrated in this neighborhood, July 19-29

I stopped my their location in Annapolis yesterday to get the scoop. They dont have any idea when they will be up and running. They claimed to be having “leasing issues”
From the looks of their Annapolis opperation I have a feeling they will have a hard time making it in the E Street location
Do you think there’s any chance of getting a TRYST-type coffeehouse/lounge/bar in the Penn Quarter. (Tryst is a funky coffeehouse/lounge/bar in Adams Morgan, stays open late, has WI-FI, good food, and live music at times.) What must we do to attract such a place?
Nothing against arts or the Fringe Festival, but shouldn’t that space be leased (or donated) to a more year-round user? Although I do like the window banners. They liven up the otherwise dead storefronts on that street.
Potato Valley (or whatever) is a joke, but this also doesn’t bode well for JPI’s lease management capabilities. Wonder why we don’t have a grocery store yet?!?
“Leasing issues” — that sure sounds familiar for JPI’s dealings in the Jefferson complex.
Anon: Can you be a little more specific on your skepticism about the baked potato joint based on your visit? Personally, I think the demographics of the neighborhood and the somewhat hidden E Street location are going to make it tough for them myself.
Potato Valley lists the E Street location on their Web site. They also list a Vegas location as well as the one in Annapolis. See:
Walking around the neighborhood this weekend we happened upon one of the owners/managers (unclear) of Proof. We asked when they were opening. He said they are going to start mock service in the next week and should be up and running to the public within a couple of weeks. Let’s hope for the week of July 9th-ish. I tried to snag my husband and I some spots for the mock service, but no dice–it’s for family and close friends of staff, although the guy seemed gracious when I welcomed him (and Proof) to the neighborhood. I really look forward to this place!
Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
Bar Louie will start mock service late this week and be open by the end of next week (that is their plan). Evidently, meals will be served until closing — 1am on weekdays, 2am on weekends — they cater to the industry crowd in other cities (yes, it is a chain) — so now we have an alternative for late night munchies! Yeah!
Proof was supposed to open for mock service last week but has been having some tech issues. They should be up and running in a few days, also. The interior is lovely, and they will have dozens of outdoor tables.
