WaBiz Journal Asks: Where should Apple put a new store in DC?
Vote for your favorite location!
The options are:
- Georgetown
- Gallery Place
- U Street
- Central Business District
- NIMBY — I’m not a Mac fan.

Even though I am not a Mac user, I would still like to see it in Gallery Place. This would help bring more interesting retail in to the area.
As much as I like it to be around Gallery Place, it will probably be between GT and Foggy bottom since we have two univeristies there.
Are there universities near the malls that have Apple stores? Plus, many universities already have contracts with computer companies that offer students significant discounts on their merchandise. These computers are often sold at stores on campus.
Yeah b/c getting to Gallery Place if you’re a student is an issue. It won’t be in between anywhere. It’ll be in Georgetown or Gallery Place. They aren’t going to put it in a non-retail area. Gallery Place seems the more likely candidate since it is likely cheaper than GT and there is more availability to choose from. I’d prefer to see it in Gallery Place simply for accessibility. I hate going to GT for anything and would rather just go to the Pentagon City location by metro or car.
Noooo………… put it far away, far far away! Why would I want a store filled with untrained “tech support” staff and overpriced electronics from a company that cares more about package design than quality control? I want REAL apples — from a grocery store.
Is Apple really looking to move into the city or was the survey just a hypothetical posed by the WBJ?
Anon: yes, it ain’t stirred enough if you can’t smell it 10 feet away.
BTW – fixed a typo in the title..
Methinks tom veil has never been to an Apple store.
“Untrained tech support”? No such thing in an Apple store. They are the best in the industry, mainly because they want to work there because they love Macs. It’s a passion.
Has tom never, ever met a Mac fanatic? Has he ever known of anyone passionate about Windows (other than Steve Ballmer or Bill Gates)?
Suggestion, tom: try actually stepping foot in an Apple store. While you’re there, challenge one of the the “untrained” tech support staff with your knowledge of technology and see who walks away with egg on his face.
Yes, Tom has obviously not lain prostrate at the feet of our Lord and Savior Steven P. Jobs. You will be punished come Judgment Day (i.e. the day you try and install Vista on your PC). Leopard, October 2007. Repent! Repent!
Seriously though, if there was an Apple Store in GP, I’d be homeless, but with a lot of shiny new Apple products.
there have been rumors circulating for years that apple was being courted to be the main retail anchor of one of the big condo buildings going up in the 14th street corridor, between thomas circle and florida ave. haven’t heard anything to that matter in years though
Just an FYI, some of the non-mall Apple stores are kind of small. The one on Bethesda Row is tiny, but it’s not that far away from the one at Montgomery mall.
Does anyone know how big the one at Clarendon is? There are mall stores at both Tysons and Pentagon City.
The most recent Apple store openings (BR & PC) seem to be close to metro stops with a fair amount of evening and weekend traffic. GP would seem to be a good choice with 3 lines coming into the station and the other two stopping a couple of blocks away.
No one has mentioned the possibility of Apple locating a store in the Ballpark District/Navy Yard area.
One of the renderings for Monument Realty’s Half St project caught my eye. If you look at image #3 at the url below, you’ll see a big pink Apple banner with what looks like their trademark silver stainless steel storefront below. It’s probably just a placeholder for the rendering but you never know.
oops, here’s the url, just copy and paste and replace the “[dot]”:

caroline sent me here, but eh, i don’t live in DC. we already have 2 in Raleigh/Durham, so i’m set thx.
The Clarendon store is probably about the size of the one in Tysons Corner and bigger than the one in Pentagon City. I bought my iMac from Tysons, my iBook from Clarendon and my MacBook Pro from Pentagon City. Not sure yet where I’ll be purchasing my iPhone. All I know is Steve Jobs has my ass in a sling as far as I’m concerned.
Also – whoever mentioned quality control being an issue clearly has never used a mac. I have had three and never once had any technical issues with any of them. Wish I could say the same for the previous Dell computer I had or the IBM laptop I use for work.
Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
Gallery Place is leading with 37% of the vote and Georgetown is in second-place with 24%. Good work with this posting. Cast your vote if you have not already done so — what an addition to the neighborhood this store would be!
