Public Service Announcement: Fitness Club Locker Room Security
Remember high school gym locker rooms where you feared putting anything valuable in the locker because just about anyone could break/manipulate your lock and run away with your belongings? Apparently, the same still holds true with Gallery Place area fitness centers.
Check out some of these crimewatch reports. Moral of the story: Don’t bring anything too valuable with you to the gym or demand more locker room security from your fitness center.

For those of those who have been vicitims of LOCKer theft, we appreciate Chris’ view of what might be considered “common sense” but in the majority of these cases, including mine, there were locks on the locker and they were picked or forced into. If it was only as simple as putting a lock on the locker…
They picked your lock? I didn’t realize…that’s a different story. I’m keeping my wallet on my during my workout now, I guess.
yeah, they picked the lock. So much for Master Combination locks. I did get a new one that the guy at the hardware store said is safer. Let’s hope he’s right–but I don’t take my wallet to the gym anymore.

Thanks to those who reported the thefts to the police. The fact is that the police (and the public) will be more vigilant because of these reports (case in point, this blog has picked up on the reports). The other fact is that, historically, only a small percentage of people report minor thefts such as pickpocketing and locker break-ins. I plead with everyone to report minor law infractions so the police will provide attention to the area and prevent any escalation to more serious crime. This is the responsibility residents must take if they want to have a secure and desirable neighborhood.
