Advisory Neighborhood Commission 2C: All Of The Blogs Are Talking

Posted by gpliving
October 24, 2006

Mainstream media may not care much about the ANC 2C election sanity & insanity, but Life in.. and Fifth & Oh are definitely keeping area residents posted on the ANC candidate campaigns.

First off, we need to mention that the only candidate from the Gallery Place/Penn Quarter area, John Tinpe, now has a website. We’re not even bashful to say that John is our pick for 2C03 because he lives in our neighborhood and has our best interests in mind.

The juicy election madness has begun with a letter being circulated at the O St Giant grocery store. Then, Tee follows up with their take on what it all means.

All four ANC 2C Single Member Districts have only 1 challenger to the incumbent, making this year’s election very exciting for our ANC.

I went over to Leroi Thorpe’s single member district along New Jersey Avenue NW. There are 4 expensive iron tree box guards in front of the church property near the corner of New Jersey and P St.
The church pays NO TAXES, pays NO ELECTRICTY and pays for any WATER and Thorpe gives the church FOUR iron tree boxes paid for by the TAXPAYERS. As a TAXPAYER i resent this obvious sign of favoritism.

Leroi Thorpe is a hack, a terrible leader, a tyrant, likely corrupt, and it is disgusting that he represents such a thriving, upper class community…..and SOOOOOO MANY people agree with me….yet he remains in power…we must do something about this…any chance he’ll be defeated any time soon?

On November 7th, vote for Kevin Chapple ANC2C02. http://www.chappleanc.com

Just a clarification for everyone reading these posts — those of you who live in the Gallery Place/Chinatown area have a choice in the November election between ANC 2C03 incumbent Doris Brooks (who votes with with Commissioner Leroy Thorpe and is running on an unofficial slate with him) and Gallery Place resident and small business owner John Tinpe. Commissioner Thorpe’s district begins north of N Street and only those who live in that area of Shaw can vote in that election.

For interesting reading on how the current ANC operates, see the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board’s ruling earlier this year in which it found that ANC 2C failed to properly inform both residents and those with business before the commission of their meetings as required by DC law. In that case, the only notice given were 5 fliers with the date and time of the meeting (no agenda items) distributed for posting to each Commissioner and a message on Commissioner Thorpe’s home voicemail announcement. According to the ABC Board, the ANC had not even called the business applying for a license to tell them that they were on the ANC agenda. Here is just a small piece of the ABC Board’s findings: “the Board finds that there is a major difference between proactively emailing and/or calling ANC constituents to inform them of the dates and times of ANC meetings, on the one hand, and expecting ANC constituents to call the personal telephone of an ANC Commissioner in order to secure this information, on the other hand. The Board finds that the latter approach goes against the very purpose of the notice requirement law, which states that “each Commission shall establish mechanisms to ensure the broadest dissemination of information with respect to Commission meetings, positions, and actions.”

Unfortunately, this is the standard practice of our Commission. You deserve better.

You can download the ruling at: http://newsroom.dc.gov/show.aspx?agency=abra&section=2&release=9528&year=2006&file=file.aspx%2frelease%2f9528%2f2006-08-16%2520Be%2520Bar%2520Board%2520Order.pdf

Every vote counts in such small districts, but the results could be dramatic this time around.

General Election, Washington, DC, Nov. 5, 2002

ANC – 2C03
DORIS L. BROOKS:
Votes 225 (67.16%)
PAUL B. THORPE*:
Votes 101 (30.15%)
[only 335 voted]
*apparently no relation to the ANC 2C Chair

ANC – 2C02
LEROY JOSEPH THORPE, JR.:
Votes 242 (52.61%)
RANDY WELLS:
Votes 211 (45.87%)
[only 460 citizens bothered to vote]

ANC – 2C04
LYDIA GORING:
Votes 150 (49.83%)
BARBARA A. CURTIS:
Votes 140 (46.51%)
[only 301 voted]

ANC – 2C01 incumbent
Alex Padro is probably SAFE
But only if everyone in his district gets out and votes.

John looks like a good spokesperson for Gallery Place.

This hasn’t much to do with construction, but I don’t think a link has been posted to the article in this week’s Washington City Paper on ANC 2C Chair Al Hajj Mahdi Leroy Joseph Thorpe Jr. and his opponent Kevin Chapple. It’s a good read:

Holy Mackerel! Sorry to go on about Leroy, but I had not seen these before. This:

And This:
http://www.leroythorpe.com/2001Mar01.pdf

From LeroyThorpe.com would seem to have been enough to get rid of him long ago. The guy they reference that ran against Thorpe previously, Mr. Wells, moved to Florida after he lost, if I recall correctly. Now I really see why!

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
