Are You Ready For Some Football?
Is this the greatest time of year or what? The sun is shining, cold beer is flowing, and the bars & restaurants in the PQ (at least those with TV’s) should be packed to capacity every Sunday for the next 16-20 weeks.
Many of us will be watching the Skins season opener this afternoon, even if the Skins are an adopted team for those of us not from the area (the Bucs are this blogger’s first love). Rocket Bar & Greene Turtle seem like great spots in which to whittle away the afternoon. Rocket Bar’s basement location is great; you don’t have to feel guilty about the pretty day outside you’re missing if you can’t see the outside world, but the lack of food can be problematic by the time Sunday night football starts. Green Turtle has food and lots of TV’s, but doesn’t seem to have the fun personality of other sports bars in the city.
What are some of the other great football bars in the Penn Quarter?

Bar Louis is a pretty cool spot with plenty of tvs and very, very good bar food. The traffic doesnt seem to be there which can be nice as a patron but certainly not good for business so I hope more people discover this place.
Don’t forget about the Greene Turtle at 6th & F St in the Verizon Center. Lots of TVs, pretty good gameday specials on food and beer and friendly staff.
My problem with watching games at the bars is the audio factor. Often times, the bars have one or more games on TV but then play cheesy bar music instead of the audio for the game. Anybody know which bars also play audio from the games?
Another fun place to watch is Lucky Strike. There’s also ESPN Zone but that tends to be overrun by tourists. Not sure about the audio at either though.
These are excellent options, can’t believe I didn’t think about some of them (ESPN Zone– D’Oh!).
Anon 10:43, I feel your pain on the audio. I’ve not been to any bars where the audio for various side by side TV’s were all on, instead usually one game has audio on the house speakers, so no matter which game you’re watching, you’re hearing the “featured” game.
That’s great of course if your game is the featured game.
The booths with their own TVs at Greene Turtle have speakers and individual volume controls on them (at least the one at my table did).
My one trip to ESPN Zone for college football was not worth it–you have to wait for hours to get a table.
Has anyone tried the bowling alley? They have some big screens at the bar, but I haven’t been back since they first opened.
I went to Greene Turtle on the Thursday night opening game between the Colts and Saints. The service was AWFUL! Our server kept explaining to us that there were only two of them in the whole place and since there hadn’t been a lot of customers on prior weeknights, they weren’t expecting a lot of customers. What kind of managment at a SPORTS BAR doesn’t expect a bigger crowd for the opening night of the NFL? Poor management at that place and unless it has the financial backing of the other Greene Turtles in the area, I don’t expect the place to last any longer than Drinx.
Everybody has off nights and makes mistakes. I am sure they will do well. The bar staff is nice. If you are nice to them, they will be nice to you.

RFD and Irish Channel are both showing all games all year. I will be at RFD whenever the Giannts are not on locally. RFD has $3 Sam Adams for games, not sure about Irish Channel’s specials.
