China Doll Closes In Gallery Place (Another Jemal Project In The Works?)
Jeff wrote in to let us know that the China Doll (627 H St NW) is now closed and has sold its building. The WaPo reports the following info:
- “Linda Lee said the building is expected to be part of a retail, office and condominium project. The family declined to name the buyer.”
China Doll is next door to Douglas Jemal’s 623-625 H St NW (housing the Orange For Mayor office). Combine the two buildings and you have a nice footprint for a much larger building!
Also, since China Doll is two doors down from the CVS, could it could also become part of Yeni Wong’s Gallery Square?

What could a developer possibly do with the China Doll buildng to make it “a mixed-use condo/retail structure”? It’s not that large. Unless they will also buy the CVS on the corner. Now that’s a decent size property. Could that be why a brand new CVS just opened on H Street two blocks down?
NWashingtonian: The building itself is not that large of a footprint, but combined with the “Orange for Mayor” building, we’re now talking about a sizeable footprint for an office/retail.
Also, you should read this link. The CVS was bought last year by a developer who plans to renovate that building and the one next to it (on 7th street) to be a 10-story condo building.
I would like to share with you some info about China Doll–something very unique and special in our neighborhood. While I have only been a patron a few times, the restaurant is well known among basketball fans as the home of weekly luncheons Red Aurbach had for many years with his close friends. The lunches were the subject of sportwsriter Jon Feinsten’s “Let me tell you a story.” I truly wish there would be more stories, but Red has been ailng for the last year or so and the lunches have discontinued. I also know the managers and owners of Chna Doll were very kind to Red and his group through the years. Red was truly one of the great characters of DC as well as the world’s best basketball coach.
I wish there was a way to put up a plaque to memorialize hs presence n our neighborhood.
Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
There’s a restaurant between the proposed Gallery Square development and the China Doll building, so I would think Jemal is the buyer. (The DC citizen atlas actually lists two properties, 629 and 631 H St, between China Doll and GS.) Looking forward to lots of empty retail spaces, Doug!!!
