Gallery Place Retail Report
Gpliving found some interesting information concerning the retail shops in the area. Specifically, building leases, and how they are up for renewal. We already know that Vincent Orange took the new lease for 623 – 625 H Street. Some of you may have read how 801 7th St. was bought by Yeni Wong last year. Well, the lease on 801 7th is reportedly up for renewal during the 2nd quarter of 2007. According to this article, Wong is gaining permission to turn the building into a nine stories, but we’re wondering when construction will begin to meet the 2007 delivery date! Most interestingly, we found that the building which China Doll (627 H St) is housed is up for renewal right now. It should be interesting to see what happens!
Update:
There will be a Historic Preservation Review Board meeting regarding the 801 7th St. building on March 2, 2006 from 9:45am to 10:20am. The meeting will be held at 441 4th Street, NW (#1 Judiciary Square) in Room 220 South.
Update #2:
624 H St. (Used to be Hunan Chinatown) is turning into a Sun Trust bank. A permit was filed on 12/07/05 with the following description: RENOVATION TO NEW BAND [sic] BRANCH, SUN TRUST INSTALL 4 SIGNS/elec/mech/plumb SUN TRUST BANK

No… that wasn’t it. It was a large concrete looking wall across from China Doll. I think a restaurant was there before and now it looks like *something* is happening there.
I have to check it out again.
Re: the concrete wall across from China Doll, I noticed on Monday that they were resurfacing this building (I think the building in question is just east of the Gallery Place office building on the south side of H, whereas the Chinatown Garden dispute is just west of the GP offices). It looked like an old Chinese restaurant from which the entire facade had been stripped of bricks (or whatever was covering the concrete).
Has anyone heard anymore about West Elm coming to the Woodie’s Building? I remember reading an article that Douglas Jemal was working on bringing the furniture store into the city.
Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
Is China Doll the one with the bakery stuff? They have good brownies
Do you know what’s going on across the street? I saw construction or something starting on an empty building.
