Chinatown Walgreens (7th and H St NW) Opens To Public On Thursday
Ed. Note (March 21): Please check our Walgreens opening announcement story here for updated information including hours, layout, and store hours.
We’re keeping the update short and sweet this afternoon. We learned from Walgreens that the Chinatown store at 7th and H Streets NW will open to the public on Thursday, March 21. Here’s a nice close up photo of the signage from one of our around town blog favorites, The 42. We peeked in from the outside and it’s looking great. More information will follow next week and we’ll see you there!

I’m curious to see what the customer experience is like at the new Walgreens – the CVS that was formerly there was beyond sketchy and into the realm of dangerous. And with regard to its alleged function as a CVS – I never actually succeeded in buying anything there. Either the line was so long that I ended up having to leave, or a fight would break out among people in line (yes, I witnessed physical fights, involving, e.g., braid-pulling, punches, etc., etc.) and I figured it was best to get out of there (I would always leave before weapons were drawn), or there was police tape blocking the entrance.
And no, for those that had never been there, I am not exaggerating (those that HAD been there already know I’m not).
The Walgreens will have 24 hr security and an off duty police officer. They had to agree to it in order to receiver their liquor license. The CVS wasn’t that bad I use to go there daily because we didn’t have Safeway at the time.
As someone who has worked in the neighborhood for 14 years, I remember some of the challenges Clara Barton Dweller referred to. But it wasn’t exactly peaceful outside the store back then, either. The neighborhood has changed substantially (transformed, really!), so I’m thinking the shopping experience will have as well. Or at least I am hoping.
