DC Crime Map For April 20-26, 2006 *Updated*

Posted by gpliving
April 28, 2006

This is what you’ve been waiting for! We’ve generated a Google Map of crime in DC – and we centered the map on our favorite neighborhood. Please be careful when trying to load the experimental web page. The map has a lot of data and Internet Explorer will take 30-45 seconds to load it and will be sluggish while you navigate the map. Firefox will load it more quickly and it is excellent for navigating the map. Click on the red markers and get all of the info for the specific event.

Brought to you my Gallery Place Giving: dccrimemaps.blogspot.com

Update: The map data has been split up into 7 PSAs Police Districts, so loading times are much better.

Interesting. Hope this becomes a regular feature.

jeff: Thanks – I’ve automated about 95% of the map creation, so I think I’ll be able to maintain it weekly.

This is a fantastic tool, thanks for developing this. I hope active residents in the neighborhood will keep an eye on this and keep our elected officials accountable. BTW, please spread the word to your neigbors: If you live in the neighborhood, register to vote. That is the best way to get attention from the political establishment. GPLiving – at some point, please post ways for people to register to vote. You deserve kudos and respect for your work.

anon: Thanks for the comment. I will be posting voting and candidate information as we get closer to elections. The GP/PQ neighborhood has grown tremendously in the last few years, so it is important that our votes are heard in the next elections.

gliving,

Please make sure you list voter registration info in advance of voter registration deadlines (and especially for the primaries), not election deadlines.

You are performing a commendable public service.

Anon: If you already have the info at hand, do you mind sending it to gpliving (at) gmail.com? It would save us some time. Thanks!

How are these crimes tabulated? What about crimes called into the DCPD that aren’t on here? Thanks for the start, but maybe we also need to look into the response of the police in our neighborhood. ANother feature?

Anon: All we are doing here is plotting data received from crimewatch.com. The data does not contain any info on response times or 911 calls. Good ideas, but we don’t have that kind of data and we don’t know if it’s even available!

Here is election info:

Link to registration form (which needs to be printed and mailed in).

http://www.dcboee.org/serv/voter_registration.shtm#vrd

Forms are also available in libraries. Stop by the MLK library and avoid printing.

Note, you must register at least 30 days before an election.

Remember, primary day, not general election day, is what matters in DC

2006 Election Calendar:

Primary:

Monday, August 14 – last day to register
Tuesday, September 12 – Primary election day

General:

Tuesday, October 10 – last day to register
Tuesday, November 7 – Primary election day
