dl004d’s Fun "Call Of Mall" Commentary
Reading the comments on Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space’s 6th & F St NW post, I am reminded of dl004d’s fun commentary, Call Of Mall:
Suburban malls combine the best of the big-city experience (intersecting streets and storefronts at every turn) with the suburbs (air conditioning and tons of parking). That’s why I enjoy Chinablock’s Gallery Place Mall. It brings the best of the suburbs (big spacious areas serving no particular purpose) into the city.

Well, I disagree with the assertation that Gallery Place is a mall. It is certainly not a mall. The vast majority of retail is oriented toward pedestrian access from the street. Also, Gallery Place is a mixed-use destination containing, residences, office space, retail, and entertainment. Furthermore, Gallery Place (not Chinatown and not Chinablock) is the cultural and entertainment centre of the Washington, DC metropolitan area. And, Gallery Place is connected to a 21,000 seat multi-purpose stadium. Nowhere else in the Washington, DC Metropolitan area is this duplicated. Nowhere!
