A big shot out to our PQ Living readers who send in photos and alert us to openings, closings, and other news. We can’t do it without you!
It’s been a while since we’ve done the link round up so here’s what we were reading recently about neighborhood news in DC and Penn Quarter. The Crib of the Week is a beauty and you’ll find at the very end. Have something to add? Leave it in the comments!

Events/News
Downtown – The Shakespeare Theatre will build a headquarters building in SW. [Washington City Paper]
Development
East End – According to a report by Cushman and Wakefield, the center of retail gravity is migrating towards the eastern part of downtown DC. Back in the day, we would only venture east of 15th Street for three reasons…a) go dancing (Club Zei/Insomnia/Decades/The Fifth Column); b) eat at that new “tapas” restaurant (Jaleo); or c) see a show (Shakespeare Theatre/DC Space/9:30 Club). It’s funny how things change. [Cushman and Wakefield (download PDF from link for report)]
Restaurants/Food/Retail
Downtown – Nine West fronting F Street in one of the National Press Building’s retail bays (529 14th St) closed its doors. This location is next to the Marshall’s. Yelp hasn’t quite figured this out yet though. (Hat tip to a regular PQ Living reader. Photo above.)
Penn Quarter – Toka Salon in the north building of Market Square (801 Pennsylvania Ave NW) closed at the end of April. Yelp hasn’t figured this one out either. (Hat tip to a regular PQ Living reader. See photo at the very top of the post.)
Penn Quarter – It’s official…Penn Commons (part of the Passion Food Hospitality Group) is coming to the former not fully built out Townhouse Kitchen and Wine Bar space at 700 6th St NW. (Hat tip to The Triangle for putting us onto this theory in early February before anyone else.)
Chinatown – Shophouse Kitchen (710 7th St NW [website] – [Twitter]) opened on May 6. Yumminess available until 10 pm daily.
Downtown/CityCenter – A lot is happening at CityCenter including the opening of Kate Spade, the permit submission for building out Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse, and the announcement that both RareSweets (dessert/sweet treats) and Paul Stuart (clothing) are taking retail bays. (Hat tip to PQ Living readers – photos above.)
Crib of the Week (CotW)
We are quite partial to this week’s CotW as it’s a unit we’ve visited a number of times. It is the top floor of the x33 tier in the Lafayette at Penn Quarter at 631 D St NW and it boasts views like no other unit because it sits at the very southwest apex of the building on the top (12th) floor. You can look west down D St NW and south across 7th St NW. You can see the Washington Monument and the sunsets are fantastic! This unit has been remodeled from the original finishes although the listing is a bit lacking in its photos – you’ll just have to trust us!
It’s a one bedroom with den, one bathroom unit, the condo fee is $632 per month, the asking price is $775,000, and the square footage is listed at 1080 ft2. [Redfin listing – 631 D St NW – Unit 1233 – MLS DC8351781] & [MRIS Photo Tour]
