First Watch Restaurants Looking At DC Locations
Andy sent in word that First Watch Restaurants is looking into opening 15 restaurant locations in the DC area. The first is to open on Aug 28 in Fairfax. The Washington Business Journal has the full story.
Andy wonders if we could use a diner in Penn Quarter? And if so, why not First Watch?

First Watch is definitely not a chic restaurant, although it could fill a gap in our neighborhood dining, especially after Waffle Shop closes in a couple years. The food at FW is excellent, but the first comment is right that our neighborhood would benefit more from a place that stays open late (or all night).
I’ve been to first watch many times down in Florida and the food is fantastic. I like Diner in Adams Morgan, although I wonder if something like that in our neighborhood would become so trendy that it would be more of a bar/hot spot than a working diner.
I’ve been to First Watch in other cities–I wish we were getting something other than another chain restaurant. A Love Cafe perhaps? Or Tryst/Open City/Diner?
I’ve been to a First Watch in Tampa and wasn’t impressed: kind of a Dennys with a few healthier options.
The problem with getting something other than a chain is that chains are the only ones with enough cash to locate downtown. That’s why a mom-and-pop like Waffle Shop has to fold and why you end up with Fuddruckers/Ruby Tuesdays/First Watch.
I’m old enough to remember the ORIGINAL Whitlowes when it was located near the FBI building, before it moved to Wilson Blvd. Had many a grubby meal after a punk show at the old 9:30 club. Now THAT would be something the neighborhood needs: an establishment that used to be in DC coming back, serving decent meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It’s a shame it’ll never happen though.
Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
I don’t think First Watch would be a good fit for Penn Quarter. I went to the website and it seems to favor decor similar to Denny’s or Bob Evans. Also, First Watch is only open during the morning and afternoon, so no dinner or late night service. I think we could use something more along the lines of The Diner in Adams Morgan. Just my humble opinion.
