Gallery Place/Penn Quarter Building Permit Update (After Hours Work & St Patty’s Day Prep)
We’re concerned about the first update because 627 H St NW (former China Doll building) is supposed to be razed. The public space permit probably means that the sidewalk on that side of H St NW will be closed. And add “after hours work” on top of that and we’re wondering what this all means for residents across the street.
Other than that, we have the Irish Channel Restaurant & Pub (bottom floor of the Red Roof Inn) getting ready to set up some tents on St. Patrick’s Day.

Anon: It appears as if Mrs. Wong is focusing on the former Lei Garden & China Doll buildings for now. No word on the CVS controversy.
If anyone is concerned about after hours construction, it is critical to contact officials and make yourselves heard. Otherwise, developers will trample on your rights to a sleep and enjoyment of your homes – so they can make more money. I suggest reaching out to City Council (is this Jack Evans’ district?), the two local neighborhood associations, the ANC (even if you did not vote for them, this is a chance to build brindges), the Mayor’s office and the permitting authority. Also, let the developer (Ms. Wong) know if you have a problem. Also, work with the police in the local Asian Liaison Unit to set up a system so the contractors do not work outside of their permit. Do not abdicate your rights through silence, because you cannot reasonably complain later. If officials say there was public notice, ask them to prove it and share your information with this blog.
looks like Madam Tussaud’s is official, and the admission fee will be $25!!!! Are you kidding me? Here’s the Washington Post story: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/02/28/AR2007022801966.html
Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
Ugh… more sidewalk closings. Wonder if they’ll move that bus stop (servicing west-bound H Street buses). Disappearing bus stops is a major problem of these sidewalk closings.
Does this mean CVS has relented and Mrs. Wong’s project is moving forward? Or will we have a closed sidewalk while that dispute is resolved?
