Gallery Square Info

Posted by gpliving
March 12, 2006

GPLiving has done some research on the new 10-story residential building coming to Gallery Place and here are the results! The building, Gallery Square, will house 25 residential units and will actually be built on top of the Kam Fong Seafood Restaurant, not the CVS (801 7th St). The CVS at the corner of 7th and H St NW will be renovated to support 4 levels of commercial space.

There is a warehouse behind the restaurant and 801 7th St building that will house a series of 1 bedroom units. It also appears that there will be no parking underneath the building. Take a look at some pictures of the conceptual plans!

GPLiving was a little disappointed to find that the real estate on top of the CVS will go undeveloped. What do you think?

When you say the real estate on top of the CVS will be undeveloped, do you mean that they won’t go above the four levels of retail? Maybe you said this and I just missed it.

kate: that’s right – the CVS building will stay at its current 4 levels.

I read that the developer was considering putting a roof-top restaurant on the CVS building. I wonder if that’s still a possibility?

anon: In one of the other drawings, there is a commercial patio area on the fourth floor. However, it is over the front part of the Kam Fong restaurant, not the CVS.

That’s not to say that things won’t change!

Will the CVS building be preserved or just its facade?

Comment by Sam on March 13, 2006 @ 6:40 pm

Hopefully the CVS will disapear.

If so and the building is restored and the windows opened up I think that will be much better.

Personally I think the setback makes the condos less desirable. Who wants to look out on HVAC equipment and puddles of water?

Comment by gpliving on March 14, 2006 @ 9:47 am

I believe the whole CVS building will be preserved with minor changes to the facade.

I also agree that the setback is undesirable. You’d have to live in the penthouse floors (9 and 10) to be able to see H St.

i’m with sam in hoping the cvs disappears. how many places do we need bad service in this city? the one on the first floor of 400 Mass Ave (or whatever it is) looks huge, so maybe that’s the new 24 hr cvs?

the setback might be a downer if you’re considering living in the building, but i think it’s kind of nice from a neighborhood standpoint. dc is a great city because you get the vibrance of a metropolis but can still see the sky. i think mrs. wong is on to something.

I think the setback is appropriate. The beauty of our neighborhood is its historic character… that is what makes it attractive and desirable.
The 4 story building (CVS) is historic and it would be ruined if built upon. Ms. Wong’s approach is appropriate. The setback of the residential building is comparable with the setback at Gallery Place.

I live facing H and 7th Streets, set back in the corner and can tell you, it is the best of all worlds! I have wonderful views (some of the most desirable in the building) and I don’t get the direct street noise.

I am very excited about the new project, I think the developer and her designers… and the city have done a great job! Even the architecture looks attractive… Frankly, while I love Gallery Place, I am so happy that I get to look at them, versus them looking at the building I live in.

[...] two phases. The first phase will include the CVS redevelopment as well as a ~25 unit condominium. We’ve reported extensively on the phase one aspect (including copies of public building plans). The second phase will consist of the 623-625 H St NW site redevelopment. It will feature a 3 level [...]
