New Poll: Name Our Safeway

Posted by gpliving
September 19, 2008

Lots of suggestions have been floating around the blogosphere on how to name our neighborhood Safeway.  The unofficial rules are that the name has to start with the letter S.  If you have any other poll option suggestions, leave a comment!

Mayor Fenty dubbed the new Safeway at 5th and K (or L St, depending on who you talk to) as the “Sexy Safeway.”

The Bloomingdale blog has named it the “Swanky Safeway.”

PQLiving suggests “Super-Stocked Safeway.”

Vote now!

I vote Sexy Safeway — it works for both the store and, from what I’ve seen so far, its patrons.

Or how about just Super Safeway? It *is* the biggest in the city, right?

Comment by dclounger on September 19, 2008 @ 2:14 pm

Sity Senter Safeway

…of course, I would also like to point out that nicknames develop over time based on what is generally accepted as true about a certain location. So we shall see what develops for this Safeway.

Solicitation Safeway!

Comment by Tour guide on September 19, 2008 @ 3:10 pm

I vote for Sino-Safeway, remembering this is (was) Chinatown. This idea was first proposed by Rib Tip in another chain. Good one!

Comment by Jon on September 19, 2008 @ 3:16 pm

All 3 names are rather boring.

How about…
– Sufficient Safeway
– Serenity Safeway
– Serendipitous Safeway
– Safer Safeway
– Sensational Safeway
– Super Safeway

Comment by Si Kailian on September 19, 2008 @ 3:39 pm

swanky safeway dangit. i dont want to get with it, but it sure is pretty to look at and spend money at.

Same-old Safeway

Comment by Anonymous on September 19, 2008 @ 4:45 pm

How about the “Have and Have Nots Safeway” for the two different sets of folks shopping there. I think this distinction is more apparent than any of the other grocery stores I’ve shopped at in DC or NoVa, especially with the food stamp announcements next to the gourmet cheeses.

Comment by rr 446 on September 19, 2008 @ 5:14 pm

sino-safeway gets my vote. i was just there and the the announcer was speaking chinese on the PA system

Comment by Ribtip on September 19, 2008 @ 5:58 pm

Ribtip here, appreciating the attribution above and reaffirming support for Sino-Safeway!

Comment by mike@555mass on September 19, 2008 @ 6:21 pm

I think Sino-Safeway sounds great!

Comment by Dupont on September 19, 2008 @ 6:41 pm

Those of us who can’t afford $19/lb strip steak and are stuck with the Soviet Safeway on 17th are a touch jealous.

Comment by Anonymouse on September 19, 2008 @ 8:01 pm

SONY Safeway (i.e., SOuth of NY ave.)

Comment by gpliving on September 19, 2008 @ 8:11 pm

Ok, we added your suggestions!

sexy isnt appropriate unless of course it’s another meeting place for the mayor and his girlfriend

Comment by mighty! on September 19, 2008 @ 9:42 pm

I nominate:

The “Same as every other Safeway” Safeway.

aint nothing too special (besides being a half block from my apartment) about our new neighbor.

Lipstick on a pig Safeway

Sorry – my vote does not follow the rule. Love the store, but it is still a Safeway. The management greeters will move on to the next opening. If the nuts at the Nut Bar, exotic fruits, organic veggies don’t sell, they will be replaced with everyday items that do. Then we will have an ordinary City Safeway.

So-What Safeway
So-It’s Here Safeway
Souped-Up Safeway
S’Urban Living Safeway
Stocked Shelves Safeway
Safe? Safeway
Honestly for the locals I vote for # 17 -(Kudos):
“So-it’s-not-Balducci’s-Safeway”
For those outside PQ/Mt.Vernon Sexy Safeway

What the heck does Safeway signify anyway? I can’t believe there was a Mr. Safeway. The food is safe to eat here?..What??
What’s the derivation..safe..safe way to go? Safeway? ??

Comment by Mike on September 20, 2008 @ 9:48 am

I’m glad Mayor Fenty came out from wherever he’s been hiding to name the Safeway. This guy is making Williams look great in retrospect.

Comment by sean on September 20, 2008 @ 11:45 am

you can’t let the mayor nickname a safeway. thats almost like fascism.

; )

Comment by rr 446 on September 20, 2008 @ 2:02 pm

years ago before Giant opened at 8th and O, Capitol Market on the 1200 block of 11th St NW was the Safeway

Comment by pqanon on September 20, 2008 @ 5:52 pm

I luv #17’s suggestion. Absolutely perfect coming from this particular blog.

Comment by LiveAndWorkinPQ on September 20, 2008 @ 6:58 pm

How about jusy Safeway.

Its a safeway, nothing more nothing less. I went for the first time today and mentioned to a friend – If this was in Arlington it would be the Safeway at the corner, nothing special.

I am thrilled to have it here, but let’s be real, its a pretty normal supermarket with a fresh coat of paint.

“coulda-been-a-Teet Safeway”

Comment by Lansburgh Guy on September 21, 2008 @ 12:52 am

I agree with the last few posters and would go with “So it’s a Safeway Safeway” i went today to see what the folks here have been having an orgasm about and found it was a Safeway. For those who have insisted that this part of town has enough density to support a grocery store, I was somewhat surprised to see it was virtually deserted – – on a Saturday. There were more employees outside smoking and talking on their cell phones than customers inside.

Sensual Safeway. Less threatening to more conservative residents.

Comment by lackadaisi on September 22, 2008 @ 9:16 am

The deli section is the worst excuse I have ever seen. They do not actually slice the meat to order – they just keep piles of already sliced behind the meat. But, then it still takes forever for them to finish serving you.

Comment by dave on September 22, 2008 @ 11:04 am

Who thought an operating grocery store would cause so much happiness/bitterness!

Schadenfreude Safeway or
Civil War Safeway

Comment by Paul on September 22, 2008 @ 11:38 am

@lackadaisi – I hardly think the deli is the worst ever. Hyperbole much?

I went a couple times the first weekend. During my interaction with the deli the counter person did not know what 3/4 of a pound meant. These are the natural growing pains. This store has been started from scratch and is staffed mostly by members of our community. It will take time to educate employees. That may mean they don’t yet know the answers to questions you ask? It may also mean that they don’t yet have enough staff qualified to operate the slicers in the deli and must pre-slice.

What’s important now is that the store infrastructure is outstanding. The entry level staff is courteous if not yet fully skilled. The management is also receptive to feedback.

Comment by gpliving on September 22, 2008 @ 11:52 am

I agree with Paul. While, I’ve had nothing but success and speedy service at the deli counter, I’ve encountered other issues. Like, the cashier not 100% sure of what type of lettuce I was purchasing. It is nice to see motivated employees that are trying and learning. In a month or two, I’m sure those kinks will be worked out.

As to the number of patrons in the store, I have actually been pleasantly surprised with the number of people shopping in the store. It seems on par with places like the new Harris Teeter in Kalorama.

I’m loving that it’s open until midnight, too. Most DC grocery stores close at 10pm and I like to shop late.

sic safeway, as in COOL. but not many folks on this board would know about that colloquialism…..

Comment by lackadaisi on September 23, 2008 @ 9:30 am

To clarify, I was the only customer at a counter manned by 3 people for the entire 15 minutes that I had to wait for my pound of turkey.

I have experienced wonderful service in other areas of the store though.

Comment by Resident of PQ on September 23, 2008 @ 11:02 am

I visited the Safeway and thoguht it was impressive but I dont know if I’ll be purchaing much fresh produce. Most looked fine but there were items that looked like they were very near expiration. Otherwise its great and the staff is friendly and helpful even if they dont know what an item is (prosciutto anyone?)
