Old Convention Center Site Construction Beginning? (pic)

Posted by gpliving

Thanks to Boris and Becca for letting us know that the entire western portion (west of the Art Walk walkway) of the old convention center site is fenced off and has a construction trailer inside of the fence. (The trailer is at the corner of 11th and H St NW) Check out the pic!

Otavio_dc notes:

In Mayor Fenty’s 100 Days…..and Beyond: 2007 Action Plan for the District, there is an entry under the “Economic Development and Affordable Housing” section for a “Groundbreaking at old Convention Center site” to take place within 4 months of him taking office. Maybe Hines is getting started soon. And, only one-half of the master plan was approved to proceed by Williams just before he left office. This is the half below Eye Street.

Otavio_dc is referring to page 25: Sign land lease with developer and approve design for old Convention Center site in Ward 2 (100 days)

While we still haven’t been able to confirm that this fence & trailer are related to the site redevelopment, we don’t know of any special events coming to the site that would require any kind of construction (like Cirque du soleil’s huge tents).

For more info on the old convention center site, check out the master plan and drawings.

It definitely SEEMS like construction, but rather odd that they’ve fenced off the area inside the lot, rather than the perimeter of the block (as is normally done). And I didn’t think they had decided yet on the final plan for that site? Who can we ask that would know about this?

it appears from here that the trailer is dropped and not hooked up to any systems but what do i know?

I do not think it is construction yet — piles of water bottles and some food service trucks — looks like staging for an upcoming event. I will check with my sources at the Downtown BID (who manage the space) to find out what is going on and will report back Monday.

Oh, duh!
It IS staging for an event — Next week’s Cherry Blossom Festival. The festival is a project of the BID, and the lot is under their control.

Construction on the OCC site is not going to happen for a while — I am under the impression that it will begin no sooner than late winter 2007/spring 2008.

I also assume that Fenty will not meet one of his goals which is “Groundbreaking at Old Convention Center site” at 4 months which would be in May. But, we’ll see after May has come and gone. I am still keeping hope alive though. This project has been moving at a turtle’s pace. Even if construction doesn’t start until late winter 2007, that is just a few months away now. I am sending the Deputy Mayor’s Office of Planning and Economic Development and the Hines-Archstone Smith team some love so that they can maybe pick up the pace a little. I encourage others reading this to send out some love also.
