Old Lei Garden & China Doll Buildings Go Transparent (627-631 H St NW)
We were expecting the worst when we read about the planned demolition of the old Lei Garden and China Doll buildings at 627-631 H St NW. But, as you can see from this picture, it appears that the facades of both buildings will be preserved in Yeni Wong’s new retail and office building.

Hello. I’m the Education Chair and Acting Preservation Chair of the Art Deco Society of Washington. The China Doll restaurant is listed and discussed in the 1982 book Washington Deco. Apparently, it used to have a “stunning black Vitrolite facade.” [That could be reproduced, as is being done for the Yenching Palace reuse in Cleveland Park.] The neon sign, which is great, must have looked wonderful against the black. So I would say that the facade is definitely worth saving. It is a part of Chinatown’s history which is fast disappearing. –Linda Lyons
