History of the Cocktail
A new exhibit is open at the National Archives (700 Penn. Ave., NW) that those of us who like to cocktail should check out. “Spirited Republic: Alcohol in American History” portrays the federal government’s alcohol policy from the American Revolution to Prohibition and into the present.
Derek Brown, of local favorites like Eat The Rich and Mockingbird Hill, has been named “Chief Spirits Advisor” by the Archives, and “will curate a new History of the Cocktail Series to discuss the role of spirits in U.S. history. In this ten-part series, some of the top writers, bartenders, spirit-makers, and thinkers in spirits and cocktails will discuss various eras in the history of the cocktail, shedding light on our Spirited Republic.”
Drink specials connected with the exhibit at participating neighborhood bars can be found here
One of the first seminars is this Saturday, May 16, 3pm-5pm. Tickets are still available here.
American Drinking: Before the Cocktail: Moderated by M. Carrie Allen of the Washington Post, panelists include Derek Brown, David Suro-Piñera, and Steve Olson.
