Riggs DC Hotel And Cafe Riggs Open Today (900 F St NW)
UPDATED (Feb 3, 2020 at 12:10 pm): Cafe Riggs’ separate website is online with menus.
The day arrived for street life to return to the building at the corner of 9th and F now called the Riggs Hotel (900 F St NW). We’ve watched the street cleared of construction equipment, the plants tidied up, the ground floor restaurant called the Cafe Riggs rehabbed, and new furniture installed over the last months. Interestingly the type style used on the awnings is very similar to the Riggs Bank coloring and font of yesteryear all evoking a historic past.
The Cafe Riggs menu isn’t online yet so we snapped a photo of it posted outdoors on 9th St – see below for the details. *is* online. The Cafe Riggs website can be found here and all menus here.
Welcome Riggs Hotel to the Penn Quarter neighborhood!
Spanish Japanese Restaurant Cranes Opens Feb 8 In Penn Quarter (724 9th St NW)
The former Ruth Chris space will reopen for dinner on Saturday, February 8 as Cranes (724 9th St NW), a restaurant and sake lounge exploring the intersections of Spanish and Japanese cuisine via Mid-Atlantic ingredients. We’ll let the press release do the talking.
Cranes will debut its Spanish kaiseki menu for dinner service…The 12,000-square foot restaurant has 50 bar seats, a main dining room that seats 175 and a private dining room that can seat up to 25 people. Cranes will be open seven days a week and offer a weekday happy hour, with lunch to follow shortly after opening. Chef and co-owner Pepe Moncayo comes to D.C. most recently from Singapore, where his restaurant BAM! is a standout, and brings an impressive resume that began with his culinary upbringing in Barcelona, where he worked with famed chef Santi Santamaria as well as Javier and Sergio Torres.
The menu can be found here and the Facebook page with photos can be found here.
Penn Quarter Staples Closes At The End Of The Week (1250 H St NW)
We won’t call it the end of an era but this Staples at the corner of 13th and H St NW was easily the largest office supply store within walking distance. We lament it is closing on Friday, January 10 as it always came in handy.
