The Native Foods Cafe, a fast casual vegan eatery, opened for service on Friday, November 14 in Penn Quarter at 701 Pennsylvania Ave NW (ground floor of the south Market Square building). We stopped in over the weekend and tried the chili, the split pea soup, and a side salad of kale. All delicious!
The menu features a whole array of vegan dishes, many based on tempeh or seitan as meat replacements. The drink side of the menu includes refreshing juice based drinks, beer, and wine. This retail space has been empty for three years or more by our memory and its being filled completes the retail fill out of spaces facing the Navy Memorial. Most importantly for those who live in “lower” Penn Quarter, the Native Foods Cafe will be open from 11 am to 10 pm every day expanding the choice of fast casual eateries south of E St NW.

&Pizza Buildout Materializing At 705 H St NW
&Pizza moved into the former Freshii and Gifford’s Ice Cream space in the 1000 block of E St NW. They’re now building out at 705 H St NW between the Starbucks and the newly opened Cava Mezze. This address was once home to two Adams National Bank ATMs and a few apartments above (we suspect). It’s shown on &Pizza’s website as “Coming Soon” – we’ll keep you posted as we learn more.

Downtown DC Street Closures For Concert For Valor (Tomorrow, Nov 11)
We mentioned that the Concert for Valor is happening tomorrow on the National Mall beginning at 7 pm. Many roads will be closed in our neighborhood and courtesy of the Penn Quarter Neighborhood Association, find the closures summarized below. We will do the best we can to provide updates but please check primary news sources for updates going forward:
National Park Service and the U.S. Park Police Street Closures and Logistics for the Concert for Valor
Tuesday, November 11
This announcement is based on the information contained in the NPS and Park Police news release, a clarifying response to my questions from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Special Operations Division Commander, and WMATA’s website information for the event.
This is an incredibly lengthy announcement, but necessary for those needing to navigate going to the Concert for Valor or accessing Penn Quarter by vehicle from the south. My suggestion for vehicles coming from Virginia is to use Memorial, Roosevelt, or Key bridges as there may be back-ups for the Third Street tunnel via the 14th Street bridge. Though Pennsylvania Avenue will remain open, there will be no vehicular access across it from the south.
