What’s Next for 918 F?

Posted by pqcompass
at February 19, 2014

918 F Street Living Social

A few weeks ago, Living Social announced it will be closing its special events and classes business and location, 918 F Street.  The company will complete the classes already sold into April and is looking for someone to take over the building lease.  What would you like to see go into this space?  A new multi-level restaurant and lounge? A hip bar and dance club?  A Penn Quarter outpost of a major retail brand?  It is an incredible, historic building, with 3 floors of great space and interesting architectural details.  Let us know if you hear what or who will be calling 918 F Street home in the future.

Downtown DC/Penn Quarter Retail Opening Report

Posted by pqresident
at February 18, 2014

zagg 1200 block g street washington dc downtown

The week before last we offered up the downtown DC/Penn Quarter closure report letting our readers know about retailers that recently closed. Today we offer up the opening report listing out businesses that opened recently or that we expect to open in downtown DC and Penn Quarter in the near future. Some are restaurants, some are retail, and we welcome all of them in joining the neighborhood!

1) Joe’s Stone Crab (15th St NW) – Joe’s opened to the public on January, 31 and Penn Quarter Living tried it out shortly after it opened. We added an Eater link with photos too. [Penn Quarter Living] & [DC Eater (photo set)]

2) The Partisan (709 D St NW) – This Red Apron Butchery and The Partisan, the linked restaurant, are coming soon. We know because they’re hiring. [Partisan tweet 1] & [Partisan tweet 2] & [Partisan tweet 3 (help wanted)]

3) Zagg Phone Repair (1204 G St NW) – Hat tip to regular PQ Living reader Jon for letting us know about Zagg, a phone repair and accessories retailer opening in the same block as the recent Dunkin Donuts opening. This is across the street from Macy’s – photo at top of story. Coming “soon”. [Zagg’s store locator] & [Zagg website]

4) Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches (1200 block G St NW) – Sandwiched in between the soon to open Zagg and the recently opened Dunkin Donuts. Opening date is TBD. [Downtown DC BID] & [Jimmy John’s website]

5) &pizza (14th St NW) – This custom pizza shop will come to K Street across the street from DC Coast at 14th St. [Washington Business Journal]

6) Allen Edmonds (1071 H St NW) – High end men’s shoe store next to the recently opened Tumi on H St NW in CityCenter. This will be the 2nd retailer to open in CityCenter so we bestow upon them the silver medal. [Washington Business Journal]

7) Longchamp (CityCenter) – Bids for a CityCenter shop build out requested. [Washington Business Journal]

8) Umaya Restaurant (733 10th St NW) – In what we call the Skanska building, Umaya is a Japanese restaurant venture that will be opened by the same owners as Cafe Asia. Early July 2014 is the quoted date. [Badwolf DC (Shaw)]

9) Marriott Marquis (901 Massachusetts Ave NW) – Opening May 1st, the “convention center” Marriott will feature multiple eating venues and lots of new rooms to support larger/more numerous conferences in downtown DC. We thought it interesting that the hotel’s homepage describes it as a “Penn Quarter” hotel. Well, they’re close. [WaPo] & [WaPo (photo gallery)] & [Marriott Marquis homepage]

10) Sports Zone Elite (675 H St NW) – Sports clothing and shoe retailer coming next to the Walgreens on H aside the 7th Street intersection (photo below). Spring 2014 is what’s on the sign. [Sports Zone Elite website]

Discounts At Ford’s Theatre For Performances Of Violet

Posted by pqresident
at February 14, 2014

Word comes to us from Ford’s Theatre (511 10th St NW) about two discounts available, one for residents of downtown DC/Penn Quarter and the other for the romantic at heart. This is for performances of Violet which run until Sunday, February 23. Every neighbor we’ve talked to who’s seen Violet has great things to say about it. Details about the discounts can be found at the end of this post and tickets can be ordered online here.

Violet
January 24-February 23, 2014
music by Jeanine Tesori; lyrics and book by Brian Crawley; based on The Ugliest Pilgrim by Doris Betts; music direction by Jay Crowder; directed by Jeff Calhoun

A touching story of love, hope and healing. In the early 1960s, a young woman travels across the South in search of a miracle. On her journey, she meets two young soldiers who help her learn about courage, beauty and her own self-worth. Jeanine Tesori (Caroline, or Change, Fun Home and Thoroughly Modern Millie) returns with a dynamic score of bluegrass, gospel, country and rock. Directed by Tony-nominated Jeff Calhoun (Broadway’s Newsies).

PENN QUARTER RESIDENT DISCOUNT

Residents of the Penn Quarter neighborhood in Washington, D.C., receive a 20 percent discount on tickets to Ford’s Theatre performances. The Penn Quarter neighborhood is defined as the area bordered by 15th Street Northwest and the Center Leg Freeway (Interstate 395) to the west and east, and between New York/Massachusetts Avenues and Pennsylvania Avenue to the north and south. These tickets may be purchased in advance through Ticketmaster online or by calling (800) 982-2787. Use promo code PENNQ. You must show proof of residence at the Box Office once arriving at the theatre. Limit of two per person.

DATE NIGHT DISCOUNT

Ford’s is running a special Date Night promotion where patrons who use code DATE50 can get two-for-one rear orchestra tickets to Violet. The musical’s story of hope and love makes for the perfect backdrop to your date night this February. The Date Night discount offer is good for performances through Feb. 23.

First Look at Joe’s (750 15th St NW)

Joes Seafood Prime Steak DC

There’s been quite a bit of buzz and build up for Joe’s Seafood, Prime Steak and Stone Crab (750 15th St. NW).  DC definitely loves it’s steak and seafood, so I’m sure the menu will do well.  On a recent visit to the bar to check out the scene, it was clear almost immediately that Joe’s is primed to be THE downtown after work drinks spot.  Joe’s offers what seems to be one of the largest bar spaces this part of town, historic architecture and a comfortable ambiance.  They are still working out the kinks, I hope, with painfully slow bar service that lacked personality and an overhead speaker system for announcing table reservations that is completely incongruent with the setting.  We look forward to a return visit to experience the dining room and definitely think it’s worth a stop after work to toast with the lifeblood of DC – lawyers, lobbyists, and politicians.
