Nice Shaking
Today we welcome a post from a long-time reader, but first time writer. Mrs Columbo makes her long-awaited debut today, we hope you enjoy this Friday afternoon post.
You wouldn’t know it by looking out your window today, but summer really is almost here. We love all of the things that come with summer weather particularly tank tops and sleeveless dresses, but First Lady biceps had always eluded us. We declare that the summer of 2013 will be different, Michelle Obama arms are within reach!
You see, almost three months ago we bit the bullet and took advantage of the new member rates at DC Bar Method (750 Ninth Street NW). We’ll confess we could barely walk during the first month, but 30-days quickly turned into 60-days and now we’re Bar Star members working our way up to “level 2” status.
The classes are incredibly intense, but the results are measurable. Bar Method advertises:
- Firm, elongated muscles
- High muscle definition in the chest, upper arms and upper legs
- Improved posture
- Long, narrow thighs
- A lifted seat and defined hamstrings
- Strong, flat abdominals
- Increased stamina and energy
It is no joke. Our enthusiasm for these classes make us sound like an infomercial, but for all those type-A multitasking results oriented junkies, Bar Method is a must.
We hope that Tropical Storm Andrea passes over soon because we can’t wait to break out our summer wardrobes.
Astro Doughnuts Doughnutting For Charity (1308 G St NW)
We received an e-mail from Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken (1308 G St NW) about their celebration of National Doughnut Day tomorrow, Friday, June 7. What we like about this celebration is that 100% of proceeds will go to a charity.
This Friday, June 7, is National Doughnut Day and Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken will celebrate with a “Raspberry Blueberry” doughnut, 100% of the sales of which will benefit the Fisher House Foundation. Available for $3 each, only 200 “Raspberry Blueberry” doughnuts will be available, which will be a square doughnut half filled with blueberry jam and the other half with raspberry jam. Traditionally, National Doughnut Day honors the women who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I, and celebrations on this day often have ties to the military. The seasonally appropriate doughnut is also a play on red, white and blue, and pays homage to Travis Gehring, the brother of Pastry Chef Jason Gehring, who served in the Navy from 1999 to 2007.
The Fisher House Foundation is best known for the network of comfort homes built on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers nationwide and in Europe. Fisher Houses are beautiful homes, donated to the military and Department of Veterans Affairs, and the homes enable family members to be close to loved ones during hospitalization for a combat injury, illness or disease.
USDA Farmer’s Market Opens Tomorrow (12th and Independence SW)

The market runs during the midday hours between 10 am and 2 pm at 12th St and Independence Ave SW and it’s been running for an amazing 17 year stretch. Summer Sips: Zaytinya
Summer Happy Hours are in full swing. We’re enjoying hopping around the neighborhood looking for this Summer’s go-to cocktail. This week, we tried the Beirutopia at Zaytinya (701 9th St., NW). Vodka, blood orange and vanilla combine for a bright citrus, slightly sweet, refreshing drink.
Do you have a favorite Summer cocktail in the neighborhood?
In other Jose Andres news, it was announced yesterday that America Eats Tavern (Jose’s Penn Quarter restaurant focused on historically American dishes that closed last year) will be re-opening at the Ritz Carlton Tysons Corner later this year. Sad that it won’t be in our neighborhood, but excited that the peanut butter and jelly with foie gras sandwich will once again be available.
