The (Unlikely?) PQ Espresso Bar
We make it to NYC a few times a year for shopping and to visit friends, and each time we go we try not to eat at the same restaurants or drink at the same bars. The city is so big, why not try something new each time you go? The one exception to that rule is Zibetto Espresso Bar on 6th Avenue near Central Park. A small but long & modern space, at Zibetto they make the finest espresso drinks you’ll have this side of the Atlantic.
DC has nothing quite like Zibetto, but we have been favorably impressed with the coffees and espresso-bar-like atmosphere of Pitango Gelato (413 7th St NW). We’ve written about Pitango before (specifically about our love of their biscotti) but we find ourselves stopping by more to have an espresso, capuccino, or sometimes a marrochino (equal parts hot chocolate & espresso). The drinks themselves are outstanding, possibly the best espresso-based beverages we’ve had in DC, but it is the atmosphere that keeps us coming back (and the friendly service). When the hour or weather means fewer crowds waiting for gelato, Pitango takes on an almost Zibetto-like vibe. It is not the same as our beloved NYC coffee bar, but it is pretty close and reminds us how lucky we are to have Pitango in our neighborhood.

Penn Quarter – The Shakespeare Theatre wins the legal battle to stay on 7th St NW (400 block). The preliminary injunction is embedded in the story for some light reading. [Washington CityPaper]
Chinatown – Walgreens puts its first imprint on its to-be-opened location at 7th and H Streets NW. [The 42 Bus]
Mount Vernon Triangle – The Triangle offers up a bunch of updates including: a) the Calvary women’s shelter relocating (4th and Mass Ave NW); b) a new restaurant called Success where the old Fun Fair Video used to be (5th Street NW); c) the former Ledo’s Pizza building is up for lease (433 Mass Ave NW); d) the Carving Room restaurant is making progress (300 Mass Ave); and e) Tel’Veh Wine Bar starts up a bottomless brunch (401 Mass Ave NW).
Penn Quarter – The inauguration is under a month away and arrangements are underway to avoid the Purple Tunnel of Doom. If you weren’t here in 2009, an extra link is provided for reference. [WaPo] & [PQ Living story on Purple Tunnel of Doom]
Penn Quarter – We knew it would only be a matter of time before a drink incorporating grasshoppers showed up at Oyamel (401 7th St NW) to go along with their grasshopper tacos. [Washington CityPaper]
Downtown – Downtown DC commercial real estate is “crushing it” according to this article. Those leases which started ten years ago at $35 to $40 per square foot may now fetch rates as high as $200 per square foot. Wowsers! [Bisnow]
Real estate inventory is a bit low this holiday season so the Crib of the Week is taking a break this week. But, we do know what we will be pointing out in 2013 as we had an opportunity to visit the sales center for this new condo that will come online in about one year’s time. We’re saving it for 2013.
Happy Holidays From Penn Quarter Living
