Penn Quarter – The former YWCA building that is slated for demo and redevelopment changes hands to a new real estate partnership. [Washington Business Journal]
Shaw – The former club called The Space has a sign up illustrating its future intended use, a restaurant called Table at 903 N St NW. [Table Facebook] & [Table website]
Mount Vernon Triangle – The Mount Vernon Triangle is highlighted as an example of DC’s urban planning towards 20-somethings. What happens when they become 30 and 40 somethings? This op-ed piece provides one hypothesis. [WaPo]
Penn Quarter – Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steak House is announced as being in the final stages of lease negotiation for 17,000 square feet of space at CityCenter. We know that the deal isn’t done until the deal is done but we do know that Del Frisco’s will be present at 1201 Pennsylvania Ave NW as they announced the opening date of July 14 in the old Les Halles space opposite the Old Post Office. The Penn Ave location is also hiring. [WaPo] & [Del Frisco’s website]
All Over DC – The godfather of go-go, Chuck Brown, passes away. A cool mural appears in his honor. [WaPo] & [Park View DC blog]
Penn Quarter – How do you give your restaurant a boost? This is a fun story about a ritual that happens at PS7 (777 Eye St NW). [Washington City Paper]
Mount Vernon Triangle – The New York Avenue Beach Bar opened last Friday in time for the Memorial Day weekend. We went opening night and were pleasantly surprised despite a few kinks that need to be worked out. Here’s a review. [The Triangle]
Local Vine Cellar (425 11th St NW) Now Open
The Local Vine Cellar wine and spirits store at 425 11th St NW is now open (202-618-3383, info[at]localvinedc.com). We stopped by yesterday afternoon for a rosé wine tasting and enjoyed the six or so pink colored libations available to sip. The store is stocked with wines from all over the world, spirits (craft and regular), craft beers, and sodas/mixers. In addition to the traditional wine making regions of the world such as France, Italy, California, and Australia, we also spotted some wines from far flung places like Turkey and Hungary. Notably, there is a rapid wine chiller inside the store where customers can cool wine down in ten to fifteen minutes.
Starting hours are Monday through Friday from 11:30 am to 7 pm and Saturdays from 1 pm to 6 pm. Until June 30, a 15% discount will be offered on wine, spirits, and beer.

We’re usually not big fans of rosé but with six different types available to taste, we did find one we did like made from 100% Washington state Syrah that’s light on the palate and easy to quaff: the Charlie & Charlie 2011 Rosé. We will be enjoying it on our PQ condo roofdeck this Memorial Day weekend!
BBQ Weekend
Memorial Day Weekend means it’s BBQ time. Whether you’re the host, the guest, the Grillmaster or the SweetiePie, here are just a few things to get at the farmers’ market (3pm-7pm, 8th St., b/w D and E, NW) tomorrow to add some extra flavor to this weekend’s feast.
Nibbles for those early guests: A selection of cheeses from Everona Dairy and Clear Spring Creamery with charcuterie from Red Apron Butchery.
The best-tasting, locally raised meats from Evensong Farm or Gunpowder Bison. (Tip: top your Bison burgers with sautéed mushrooms from The Mushroom Stand)
Don’t forget some awesome pickles from Gordy’s Pickle Jar.
To finish it all off, fresh-picked, local, seasonal fruits like strawberries, blueberries and cherries from Black Rock Orchard or Sand Hill Farm. (Tip: My favorite Summer dessert is fresh berries with Angel Food Cake and whipped cream. Yum!)
Be sure to say thanks to the hostess with a custom made bouquet of flowers from Wollam Gardens.
Have a fabulous and delicious weekend!
MLK Library Friends Meeting Tonight
We received an e-mail announcing a meeting for the Martin Luther King Library Friends who are a mix of residents who love the MLK Library and advocate on its activities and programs. They contribute to a website, have a Facebook page, and an e-mail address. They are hosting a meeting tonight at 6:30 pm in the MLK Library in Room 221 where you can learn more.
From the e-mail:
The MLK Library Friends are a mix of residents, librarians, and library users who love the MLK Library and want to promote its activities and programs. The group meets monthly to discuss what’s going on at the library and what we can do to help promote library services and usage of the branch. We’re looking for a few (or a lot of) good members to join the team as we continue to build our membership and plan for outreach activities later in the year. For more info, visit dclibraryfriends.org, find us on Facebook at MLKLibraryFriends, or email JoinMLKFriends@gmail.com. The next meeting is Tuesday, May 22 at 6:30pm at MLK Memorial Library, Rm. 221.
