Here’s what we were reading recently about neighborhood news in DC. Have something to add? Leave it in the comments!
Dupont Circle – Melody Records on Connecticut Ave NW is closing. We used to buy our cutouts there. RIP DC retail. [DCist]
Penn Quarter – Penn Camera is filing for bankruptcy and shutting down operations. Five of eight retail stores have been closed and the 840 E Street location is one of three holding a clearance sale closing once the inventory is gone. We’ve patronized this location when it was next to Weschler’s renting and/or purchasing various cameras and photo supplies over the years. RIP DC retail, again. [WaPo]
Penn Quarter – The E Street Theatre is running the Capital Classics series through the end of February including great movies like To Kill A Mockingbird, Rear Window, and The African Queen. [E Street Capital Classics [PDF]]
Chinatown – This year’s Chinese New Year’s parade in DC looks to be bigger and better than ever. You can even check out the sponsorship opportunities on the parade’s very own website! [WaPo] & [DC Chinese Lunar New Year Parade Website]
Downtown – The Hamilton may attempt to get in some fugu. That’s pufferfish (or blowfish) for you adventurous fish eaters and it requires extra special preparation. Why? Read on. [Washington CityPaper]
Downtown – The Downtown Neighborhood Association is holding its monthly meeting tomorrow night at Calvary Baptist Church beginning at 6:30 pm. [DNA Website]
All Over DC – It’s Restaurant Week this week in DC and this story has a nice summary of which restaurants don’t skimp during the promotional event. [Washingtonian]
Gallery Square Retailers Announced (7th & H St NW)
The WaPo’s Capital Business blog has the scoop on which retailers will be going into the Gallery Square development on Northeast corner of 7th & H St NW. They are: Walgreens, YO! Sushi restaurant (UK-based) and Panera Bread! We do have to caution that the Wallgreens announcement is the only one that is official.
As we’ve seen many times in the past, we can never be 100% sure that a retailer is going to open up until they are actually open! Prior tenant, CVS, fought hard to remain open on the same corner a few years ago, perhaps illustrating how hot the retail market is on that corner. The WaPo alludes to a per sq foot rent as high as $160!
The Penn Quarter In & Out List For 2012
We’ve fought the urge for years to publish an in & out list, not wanting to offend. But for 2012 we decided our New Year’s Resolution would be to finally publish a list, and hope the outs know we still love them and that there is always next year. So without further adieu, the first annual PQ Living In & Out List for the New Year.

A New Year at Minibar

I was fortunate enough to secure two seats for dinner at Minibar (405 8th St, NW) last night. The first and last time I ate there was two years ago and I was anxious to see if the experience would be as incredible. The chefs did not disappoint! A few highlights of my meal are shown below.
Rumor has it that after America Eats Tavern closes in July, the space will be completely renovated into a kitchen laboratory and expanded Minibar. America Eats Tavern would move to a new location as a permanent fixture on the dining scene and Café Atlantico would also eventually re-open in a new home. Please let the rumors be true!
