Poste Brasserie Patio Opening & Earth Day Celebration Today
Poste Moderne Brasserie (555 8th Street NW) let us know that they’re opening their patio this afternoon for the season for full service and throwing a backyard bash in honor of the 40th anniversary of Earth Day.
Bev Eggleston of Eco Friendly Foods will provide a 400 pound pig which Chef Robert Weland and his team will smoke and roast for the celebration. From 5:30 to 8 pm, a $15 entry free (cash only) will score a taste of the roasted pig and one of mixologist Rico Wisner’s garden punches. At the event, all “Garden Menu” food and select drink items will be available for $4 each. The new Garden Menu will be unveiled but we also know from experience that you can’t go wrong with the Truffle Frites.
A percentage of the entrance fee and food and beverage sales will benefit both the Washington Youth Garden and Beet Street Gardens, a community garden project founded by Katie Aldworth, resident server at Poste. For more information on the Washington Youth Garden, visit www.washingtonyouthgarden.org and for more info on Beet Street Gardens, visit www.beetstreetgardens.org.
PQNA Breakfast Meeting Wednesday At Madame Tussauds
The PQNA is hosting its monthly breakfast meeting at Madame Tussauds (side entrance on 10th between F & G St NW) Wednesday morning starting at 8:30am. The guest speaker will be James Hughes, the Senior Director for Strategic Planning @ WMATA (Metro). He will talk about potential changes to Metro and Metrobus service (i.e. reducing expenditures) and its impact on businesses, residents, and employees in Penn Quarter.
Retail Space Comes To 700 6th St NW
A long while ago, we discussed how unfortunate it was for the yet-to-be-built 700 6th St NW office building to not guarantee any ground floor retail in its plan. The project’s website mentioned 1st floor retail or office, making us expect for the worst: a single-use building amongst our mostly mixed-use neighborhood. Well, we are pleased to report that over 6000 sq ft of ground floor space is now being marketed for retail use! The retail broker’s website has more detailed information about the space, including a restaurant test fit diagram.
We hope that this retail space and the gigantic retail space across the street at 777 6th St NW find tenants soon and add some much needed life to that section of 6th Street!

Here’s what we were reading last week about neighborhood news in DC. Sound off about anything neighborhood oriented in the comments.
Downtown – The Niki de Saint Phalle sculptures in the median of New York Avenue are installed. Public art is pleasant! [The Triangle]
NoMa – An update on RFPs on the dilapidated Gales School on Massachusetts Ave. Will it really become a homeless shelter? [DC Metro Urban Diary]
Southwest – A water taxi service sets up shop and even though it won’t be the Staten Island Ferry, it’s a start towards regularly scheduled water transportation service. The map even shows it connecting to Metro. Intermodal transportation – we like it! [SWDC Blog]
Mount Vernon Triangle – Buddha Bar’s latest opening date is May and we believe it. [WaBizJo]
Capitol Hill – The facade of Union Station will be transformed nightly at dusk through the projection of a great American landscape onto its front face through April 25. This is being done in conjunction with the History Channel to promote the series America: The Story of Us which begins April 25. [History Channel] Hat tip: Cheryl
