Wayback: Chinatown’s Friendship Arch…1992
We fired up the Wayback time machine this morning to see where in time we could go. Dialing in 1992 led us to this eastward look down H Street NW towards Chinatown’s then six year old Friendship Arch with 7th Street NW in the foreground. A few clues? The Metro escalators on the far right empty into the open air and the ground floor tenant of the building at the northeast corner of 7th and H Streets NW is the Asia Culture Center. The style of the cars is telling also. Clicking on the photo will get you a closer look.

Downtown Restaurants Participating In Tap DC/World Water Week
Would you kick in an extra $1 or $2 when you eat out to get clean, healthy drinking water to those who need it the most? Here’s your chance. In the Western world, we take clean and safe running water (DC water lead content jokes aside, please) as a given but in many less advantaged parts of the world, getting access to water let alone clean water is a struggle that consumes a lot of human effort. Clean, safe water is one of the key elements required to reduce the incidence of disease and is essential to life itself. UNICEF, the United Nations Childeren’s Fund, runs World Water Week every year as a way to promote awareness and raise funds to get children safe access to water through the Tap Project. DC’s incarnation of the Tap Project can be found at http://www.tapdc.org.
To learn more about how readers and downtown restaurants are assisting with the project, check after the jump. Continue Reading >>
515 D St NW Plans Three More Stories

The latest Historic Preservation Review Board update lists the following case for consideration:
515 D Street, NW, HPA #09-144, concept/three-story rooftop addition
515 D St NW is an office building owned by the DC Gov. It is currently 3 stories, so it definitely has room to expand upwards. It should be interesting to see if any new design elements are added to the existing structure.

We’re Holding Out For A Toaster
We’ve probably walked by the United Bank at 1001 G ST NW thousands of times. We’ve certainly noticed the gifts in the windows hundreds of times. And yet it was only recently that we put two and two together to figure out that they were displaying the free gifts they’ll give you when you open an account at the bank.
Many banks offer some kind of gifts or rebates. We’ve received gift cards or small cash deposits from both ING and TD Bank when we opened accounts; but outside of redeeming our Citi ThankYou Rewards, we’ve never been given a merchandise gift from a bank.
United Bank may be a fine spot to do your banking, but would one of these gifts convince you to open an account with them?
