Where’s News Box?
Early this morning, a Penske truck pulled up to the Gallery Place metro stop at 7th & H St NW and out came 2 workers with dollies. We thought it was a food delivery truck, but instead of walking into a restaurant, the workers walked towards the rows of news boxes that populate the intersection. They took a few news boxes away. There is no doubt that this was done to clear the sidewalks for a large amount of pedestrians expected during the inauguration next week.
Normally, this isn’t really incredibly news worthy, but we thought we’d turn it into a trivia question! What news boxes are missing from this picture?
Readers who chime in with the correct answer will learn how to receive a free cupcake from Red Velvet today. 😉
Work Continues On 7th St Water Main *Updated*
We just wanted to update our readers that 7th St between G and H St is still blocked off to vehicles as of 4pm today. Pedestrian traffic is unaffected. The water main break, or rather leak, seems to have been isolated under the road directly in front of Ruby Tuesday Chop’t restaurant.
It does not appear that the break will be fixed in time for evening traffic, so it would be best to avoid 7th St tonight. As WTOP reported, no water service disruptions were experienced this morning, but WASA may have shut off water later in the day (around noon). That would affect all restaurants on the block as well as the Gallery Place condo. Feel free to leave a comment if you have been affected!
Update: Late this evening, repair work was completed. Also, it does not appear that water was ever shut off to nearby residences or restaurants today (or it was shut off for a very short amount of time).
Another Construction Fence Comes Down
A pleasant sight greeted us on our morning commute on Tuesday. The sidewalk and left lane of traffic on 10th street in front of Ford’s Theatre were open, no more construction fences. As downtown becomes Jersey-barriered for the inauguration, it is so nice to see one of our long disrupted streets opened up again.
Public Meeting Tonight About “G Street Bus Depot”
We can’t say that we’re surprised. While most peoples’ intentions for relocating the DC to NYC buses were genuine at the start, this blogger is convinced that designating a de facto bus depot directly in front of a residential building is never a good idea.
Three weeks ago, we reported that the pickup spot for DC to NYC buses was moving from their usual office building-bounded location on 11th St at about F St. The new site was designated as G St between 9th & 10th, which is in front of MLK library, but also in front of a neighborhood condominium.
In the past, this blog has written and announced neighborhood meetings about the negative impact of idling buses, especially when they’re in front of residential buildings. But, some people may forget about the impact until they are newly subjected to it for 30 minutes at a time several times a day. An additional headache created by the DC to NYC buses is that crowds of people are either clogging up sidewalks or are seeking a nice climate controlled building to wait for the bus. And, buildings like the MLK library aren’t open 24 hours.
To that end (no pun intended), there will be a meeting tonight, Tuesday, January 13, 7:00pm at the FlashPoint Conference Room @ 916 G St NW. Any interested residents will be able to voice concerns with city leadership over the Bolt Bus and Mega Bus stop now in front of MLK library.
