National Capital BBQ Battle This Weekend
Like licking your fingers? Like licking someone else’s fingers? Have we got the event for you!!! It’s Safeway’s National Capital Barbecue Battle and it includes food, fun and music on Pennsylvania Avenue between 10th Street and 14th Street both days this upcoming weekend (June 21 and 22).
Admission is $10 for adults and kids age 6 to 12 (kids under 6 get in free) and there are a number of attractions such as the SunTrust Rock Climbing Wall and the Honda Ultimate Garage (ugh…why does everything have to have a corporate brand these days???). A few of the Wizards will be stopping by and yes, even the master of DC go-go, Chuck Brown, will be performing on Saturday evening. Lots to like here although your waistline may not be so happy come Monday morning.

PQ Installation Of Textile Museum Unravels
We unrolled news about the 7th Street expansion of the Textile Museum into the PQ last September and it was another in a string of opening announcements. The expansion appears to now be threadbare as we received notice that the Textile Museum (2320 S Street, NW) will forego the expansion due to the costs associated with opening an annex in our part of town. We’ll let the fabric of the press release speak for itself:
Why did the Museum’s Board of Trustees decide to forego the expansion project?
In final analysis [sic], the Penn Quarter expansion project could not be implemented within a sound financial framework. Unforeseen costs resulted in an expansion project budget the Museum’s Board of Trustees and management believe to be unsustainable, particularly for a building the Museum would not own.
That’s too bad. We were looking forward to rolling out the red carpet.
PQ Olsson’s Announces Closing
The signs finally went up and the e-mail finally went around announcing that the Penn Quarter Olsson’s and the Footnotes Cafe, one hometown bookstore in a local independent chain and a fixture for the last fifteen (that’s one-five) years at 418 7th Street, NW, will be closing its doors at the end of the day Friday, June 27. Everything in the store is now on sale for a 50 to 75% discount off the stickered price. Continue Reading >>
