Sound Off: Relocation Of DC To NYC Bus Loading Zones
Many readers wrote in last week to let us know about how DDOT has relocated, or rather officially located, a loading zone for the various Chinatown buses, like DC2NY and BoltBus. The zone is designated as 10th & D St SW (near L’Enfant Plaza).
DDOT claims that the buses are congesting streets, disrupting transit and causing a safety hazard for pedestrians.
Readers apparently have agreed with DDOT’s assessment and have sounded off about excessive bus idling as well as the loading and unloading during rush hour.
So, now DDOT has provided a solution by forcing buses to L’Enfant or else face a $1500 fine. We’re already hearing rumblings about the location of the loading zone far away from where any residents live. But, we don’t know if any particular block in this city was jumping up and down to be designated as a bus depot. Sound off!
A Fistful Of Cinema
Maybe we’re showing our liberal arts nerd side too much here, but we almost didn’t post about this hoping it would be less crowded and guarantee us a seat. But since we’re here to serve you, the reader, we of course had to share.
Actor Tatsuya Nakadai and author Teruyo Nogami are hosting a showing of Kurosawa’s Yojimbo at the Meyer Auditorium (Freer/Sackler).
The event starts at 1 pm today and tickets are required. The auditorium seats 300, and we expect this one to be packed, so you may want to get there an hour early to pick up your ticket.
No matter how nice it is outside today, we highly recommend taking a break from the outdoors to attend this event.

Is This Realistic Or Abstract?
A little outside the PQ, but worth the walk. The WVSA ARTiculate Gallery is showing off works commissioned as part of the third annual Every Dog Has its Day: Celebrating Our Canine Companions. By submitting your pup’s photo (or any other animal, they don’t discriminate) you can commission a pet portrait to be completed by one of the art students, in either realistic or abstract style.
Prices range from $100 to $500, with 30% of the commission going to the student. From a press release on WVSA their mission is to “develop, implement, and support arts-integrated education and employment programs for children and youth with special skills, special talents and special needs.”
We’ve always wanted a painting of the dogs in our lives playing poker together, this may be our chance; and for a good cause too. I wonder if they could put something like this together for us?

Hanging At The NPG/AAM East Steps
This is now a sight we are accustomed to seeing since the east steps of the National Portrait Gallery/American Art Museum reopened after the museum’s renovations. People sit on the steps and talk or laugh or couples hold each other or enjoy their takeout. After walking up to McDonald’s for a weekly $1 hot fudge sundae (no “Government Employee Specials” at the 7th Street McD’s), this writer sat on the top steps one weeknight day last week for about thirty minutes scooping at vanilla and hot fudge, watching the crowds go by and generally enjoying a relaxing evening. There’s a nice elevated view of 7th Street and all the activity from that vantage point. Try it some time. We liked it and you might too.
