Why Visitors Heart DC
A few friends came to town last month representing two of the brewers, Flying Fish and Troegs, pouring their tasty beverages at the Savor beer and food event Columbo reported on and I thought I’d show them a little bit of what the Penn Quarter had to offer after the event finished that Friday night. After a short walking tour, we settled on going to Oyamel for tacos and the conversation got going.
I expected to hear the usual DC visitor chatter from my guests about how they love the museums, they love the monuments and they love the Mall. There was some of that in the conversation but I nearly fell off my stool when the object that most grabbed their affection turned out to be…the sidewalk countdown timers that adorn our crosswalks.
I heart crosswalk countdown timers? Who would have known?
What do your visitors heart about DC?
Snake In The City *Updated*
Not too long after we’d finished running the Race for the Cure on Saturday, Mrs. Columbo and I spotted a snake wiggling his/her way up E street. There were a decent number of people out, so the snake quickly went down into a sidewalk grate and peeked out occasionally to see what all the fuss was about.
This grate is right in front of Asia Nine. The snake started drawing quite a crowd and a front desk person from the Artisan came out to investigate and said they’d call animal control. Never was much of a boy scout so we’re hoping this was a harmless reptile who just had a bad sense of direction.
** UPDATED 6/8/08 @ 5:26 pm**
An eyewitness reports that I missed the best drama. Apparently animal control declared (over the phone) that the snake was a garden snake and not a pet, so they would not come out and pick it up (they only pick up pets?). The snake soon left the grate and slithered down the sidewalk to McDonald’s, under their door and into the restaurant. One brave customer picked up the snake by the tail, carried him out, and dropped him down one of the grates where an audible splash was heard from his fall. Presumably a sewer grate, and hopefully the snake has made his/her way to safety.
