With an influx of residents into the Mount Vernon Triangle and the lower and eastern part of the Penn Quarter, there have been calls for another voting precinct to be carved out of Ward 6 with an accompanying PQ voting location. Right now, PQ Ward 6ers have to trek over to Capitol Hill to vote. A paragraph on Ward 6 Councilmember Tommy Wells’ blog says it all:
Now there’s good news to report on this front. The Board [DC Board of Elections and Ethics] is planning to take final action on Wednesday, May 7th, regarding the creation of Precinct 143 in Ward 6 — the District’s newest voting precinct — essentially splitting the current Precinct 130 into two parts.
To show your support for creating a new Precinct and a local polling place (the Chinese church at 5th and H St, NW), send a letter of support to the Board of Elections and Ethics, 441 4th Street, NW, Suite 250N, Washington, D.C. 20001 by close of business Tuesday, May 6th. If you want to attend the Board meeting in person, it will be held in room 280 – north of the One Judiciary Square building at 441 Fourth Street, NW, May 7, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. For further information, the Board can be reached at 202-727-2525 (TDD: 202-639-8916 – e-mail: boee [at] dc.gov).

Tennis Court To Be Built On Old Convention Center Parking Lot (11th & H St NW)
We thought that groundbreaking on the Old Convention Center site was bound to happen soon. The deal making Hines Archstone the master developer of the site was inked in December of 2007. But, upon reading this newsletter (pdf), it appears that actual groundbreaking won’t occur until March 2009.
That leaves plenty of time for more events to occur on the 10-acre parking lot. So, how does a tennis court sound? The Washington Kastles, a new professional tennis team and part of the World TeamTennis League, has chosen the Old Convention Center lot to house their 2,020-seat temporary stadium.
The schedule lists (pdf) the dates for the matches that will occur at the 11th & H St NW tennis court. All seven matches will occur between July 8 and July 23.
According to their website, the Washington Kastles’ offices appear to be locating at 509 7th St NW.

Another Boulevard Opens
It was a long miserable Winter if your commute had you going near the Woodies Building, but relief is in sight. Recently construction fences were removed from the 11st street side of Woodies (between F & G), although there are still barriers in the road reducing the number of lanes open to auto traffic.
It’s hard to believe the sidewalks around Woodies were ever free of fences and construction crews. Hopefully the rest of the sidewalks will be completed soon too.
5th and Eye Proposals Revealed
Last night at the Carnegie Library, interested neighbors were presented with four different visions for the vacant lot at 5th and Eye NW. The redevelopment of this corner and the entire 900 block of 5th Street is a vital connection between the Penn Quarter, the Safeway and other shops at City Vista. Development on this lot will provide a neighbor for the folks at 555 Mass Ave Condos who have been eagerly awaiting these improvements. DC’s Office of Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development will be posting all the proposals on their web site at www.dcbiz.dc.gov.
