At the corner of Douglas Development’s Atlantic Building (950 F St NW), a retail window recently began displaying a lady’s face. This corner space is the rumored site of the Panera Bread, but we couldn’t find a link between the window image and the restaurant. Do any readers have any suggestions?
It is also strange that the interior graphic was placed in the same window as Douglas Development’s external window logo, obscuring the woman’s face. The next window over does not have a Douglas Development logo, so it would have made more sense to put the graphic in that window.

Power Outage Last Night Around Verizon Center
Looks like the power went out and was restored last night in and around the Verizon Center. This NBC4 story implies that there was some concern it would happen again this morning.

SmartBike Program Comes To Penn Quarter! (March 2008)

The Bike-sharing Blog updates us on DC’s SmartBike program. It basically looks like it’ll be the Zipcar/Flexcar of bicycles. From the Bike-sharing Blog:
The goal for launching Washington, D.C.’s bike-sharing program, “DC SmartBike” is in March 2008. This will likely be the first 3rd generation (high-tech) bike-sharing program in North America. The pilot will include 120 bikes, 10 stations, and is to be run by Clear Channel Adshel, the provider of Bicing.
The annual membership fee is likely to be $39 and the first 3 hours of each rental will be free. This fee seems reasonable, however, with 3-hr rentals, turnover and therefore ridership will be limited as individuals will likely keep the bikes longer.

New Apartment Building Under Construction (Ashton Judiciary Square – 750 3rd St NW)
The site at 750 3rd St NW hosted a Best Western in years past. In 2004 or 2005, ABDO Development bought the Best Western and proceeded to demolish the building. ABDO planned to build a luxury condominium on the postage-stamp sized lot. The new condo was to be named Penn Tower (pic) with an address of 730 3rd St NW.
However, something happened with those plans over the past year. We’re guessing the market wasn’t ripe for condos and that ABDO may be busy with other projects which may not have been selling as quickly as expected.
The result is ABDO transferring ownership of the site to The Hanover Company, which bills itself as A National Developer of Luxury Apartment Residences.
Permits have been approved for site preparation and we expect full-on digging & construction to begin in April. This site is located next to the 300 Mass Court Apartment building.
