The Chinatown Revitalization Council (CRC) has invited neighbors to attend tonight’s new year meeting where Mayor Fenty will give a keynote address about the “State of Chinatown.” The CRC is billing itself as a more open and inclusive Chinatown organization when compared to the Chinese Steering Committee and its “inner circle.”
In addition, our public discussion session will also feature key Councilmembers and agency officials speaking about our concerned issues, such as the Chinatown development, the audio/video display billboards next to the Archway, Street/Alley lightings and cameras for safety measure, a Ward 6 polling place in Chinatown, etc. You can learn more about our past activities on our web site at (www.chinatowncouncil.org). Riding the 30s Bus
Metro recently announced changes to the very heavily traveled 30s bus route between Friendship Heights/Chevy Chase and Anacostia (WaPo did a story on it too). It runs through both the poorest and the ritziest neighborhoods in DC – four digit incomes to seven digit incomes. I’m on a quest to use my car less so I rode the 30s to do errands between work downtown,
Wayback II: Leader Theater On 9th
We’re setting the Wayback machine to around 1921 or 1922 with this photo of the Leader Theater that stood at 507 9th Street. The silent movie “The Kid”, starring Jackie Coogan and written and directed by Charlie Chaplin, is showing and by taking a closer look you can see that The Adventures of Tarzan runs every Saturday and Sunday. Note the pillar sculptures of women flanking the entrance and the inscription at the top of the front facade reads 1910 (presumably the building’s construction date). They don’t make theaters like this anymore! Anything else worth pointing out?

Prepare To Start Whistling Sweet Georgia Brown!
If you ever look where you’re walking, you probably already know this: On the Ides of March the Harlem Globetrotters will be at the Verizon Center for two shows (games?), and the ads are plastered all over the streets. Not the same without Curley Neal playing, still I bet they put on a fun show. And who knows, maybe they’ll play those evil robots from the Gilligan’s Island TVmovie! — (Ed. Note: it was a toss up between this reference and the time they were on Scooby Doo).
Having seen the Globetrotters a few times in our youth, we’re tempted to hit this event. Anyone seen the Globtrotters live, recently?
