Downtown DC Nordstrom Rack Opens On October 27 (12th and E St NW)
It’s official…the newest Nordstrom Rack at 12th and E St NW (555 12th St NW) will have its grand opening on Thursday, October 27 at 9 am. This store replaces the Barnes & Noble that closed earlier this year. Thanks goes to a regular PQ Living reader for tipping us off and sending us the last photo below.
We peeked inside and saw shelves filling up with all sorts of items including clothes, shoes, and accessories. We’ve regularly patronized the Nordstrom Rack store at 19th and L St NW but now don’t have to go quite so far.
Guerrilla Marketing Returns To Penn Quarter Through Building Projections
We observed a new form of guerrilla marketing in Penn Quarter last weekend in the form of projected images on the side of the Wah Luck House. A Netflix advertisement for the documentary 13th which is themed on the 13th amendment of the U.S. Constitution that abolished slavery. The documentary [IMDB link] “analyzes the criminalization of African Americans and the U.S. prison boom.” as indicated on the Netflix page.
We’ve seen other forms of guerrilla marketing before in Penn Quarter including large decals on the sidewalk advertising the sales of the CityVista condos and the now gone Crime & Punishment Museum, and a couch in the middle of 7th Street advertising ZipCar. If nothing else, this form of advertising is a clever way to capture attention. Penn Quarter, especially the 7th and H Street NW intersection, has some of the highest traffic and pedestrian counts in Washington DC so it makes sense that the neighborhood is a target for this type of advertising.
How does the image projection system work? Looking at the photo below, we see the projector mounted on the top of a minivan parked on 6th St NW projecting the image onto the large south facing wall of the Wah Luck House at the corner of 6th and H St NW. The system is powered by a portable generator powering the projector and a targeting computer inside the minivan that realigns the image so that it renders properly on the face of the building. The projector is covered with a tarp on top of the van to avoid attention and keep it dry if it rains. An attendant monitors the system while it is in operation.
Truefitt & Hill Barbers Now Open (1155 F St NW)
Truefitt & Hill, a men focused barber shop, is now open each day of the week at 11th and F St NW (1155 F St NW). The shop competes with the likes of Grooming Lounge in the Golden Triangle portion of downtown DC and the Barber of Hell’s Bottom in Shaw offering similar services such as cuts, shaves, and hair coloring. The shop also carries hair care products.
We first reported on Truefitt & Hill in April of 2016. This shop replaces the former Andrew’s Ties shop in this space.

DDOT Associate Director of Transportation Operations & Safety and Project Manager for Park DC: Penn Quarter/Chinatown Pilot ProjectDDOT is now ready to initiate this Federally-funded study to see if by raising or lowering parking prices and by being able to direct drivers to available parking spaces, they can reduce traffic congestion in the test area bounded by 11th, 3rd, H, and E Streets NW. We will find out more about the implementation plan and how drivers will know where parking spaces are available. Be prepared to tell DDOT how metered parking in the study area impacts your business and if a resident, how it affects your quality of life.
RSVP via email by noon Friday, October 7 to: Jo-Ann@PennQuarter.org
