Tunnel Fine Wines & Spirits, a new wine, beer and liquor store adjacent to the Penn Quarter is now open at 311 H Street, NW. The store is in the center of a section of buildings that escaped the wrecking ball next to the recently opened Sonata condo where H Street meets Massachusetts Avenue. The Cave, the former store to the left of Tunnel, is vacating its premises. 12 Volt, the car electronics business to the right, has been in this area of town since this writer’s high school days so no move is expected from them. A recent visit to Tunnel Fine Wines satisfied this writer…here’s the skinny.
Scandal: Washington Convention Center Gets Renamed To Washington Convention Center
The WaBizJo has an article on how the Washington Convention Center is being renamed to honor DC’s first mayor, Walter E. Washington. So, yeah, it’s still called the Washington Convention Center. That was easy!
Though, Penn Quarter residents are no strangers to excessive naming of public spaces. For example, we have the two Metro stations: Archives/Navy Memorial/Penn Quarter and Gallery Place/Chinatown/Verizon Center.
Fifteen Is My Limit On Schnitzengruben
On this blog we’ve discussed many times the lack of grocery stores in PQ, even the mom & pop varieties. Today we look at longtime downtown store that can help supplement your shopping options.
Cafe Mozart is at 1331 H ST NW, within the just outside the limits of the DNA. A German deli and general store (pastry shop & coffee shop too) in the front, bar and restaurant in the back.
The convenience store portion of Cafe Mozart is made up mostly of German/European candies, jelly’s, and cake mixes, but they do have breads, pickles, mustards, coffee, and other misc items.
The deli section is where the front half of Cafe Mozart really shines, with a variety of meats and cheeses (Mmmnnnnn, head cheese), including several varieties of sausage. Also worth noting that Cafe Mozart is open 7 days a week, so even on Sundays you can get your German deli fix.
Shakespeare Theater’s Harman Center – Behind The Scenes
The bloggers at PQLiving were recently given a special tour of the Shakespeare Theatre Company’s new Harman Center at 6th & F St NW. While we were there, a tech rehearsal of Tamburlaine was in progress. The following is a picture tour of the evening.
First stop was a behind the scenes look at the Tamburlaine tech rehearsal. You can see the computer screens of the lighting, sound, and effects controls.

The theater in the Harman Center is completely isolated from the surrounding building. Here, you can see a huge rubber isolation joint. The red line metro runs pretty close by, and an office building sits on top of the theater. When recording a performance, the ultra-sensitive microphones are spared from outside noise.
