The Shakespeare Theatre’s new Sydney Harman Hall finalized their Saturday open house schedule as a part of the Penn Quarter’s Arts On Foot festival. We’ve posted it below:
11 a.m. Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony
12 p.m. CityDance Ensemble performance
1 p.m. Juggling Demonstration by Rich Potter
2 p.m. Sneak Peek Rehearsal for the Shakespeare Theatre Company’s “Tamburlaine”
3 p.m. Blood and Weapons Prop Demonstration
4 p.m. AfroBop Alliance performance
5 p.m. Fight Choreography workshop
6 p.m. Sneak Peek Rehearsal for the Shakespeare Theatre Company’s “The Taming of the Shrew”
Overheard at the Farmer’s Market
While shopping for produce, I overheard a conversation about our neighborhood that bears repeating.
Two middle-aged business women were discussing the number of panhandlers who had set up shop in the area surrounding the Farmer’s Market on 8th Street between D and E.
“I’m just not going to come here anymore,” said the blonde woman as she sampled a slice of tomato. “I mean, I can’t even walk from my office to the Market without being harassed. Men peeing in the alley, cursing at me, calling me names; I’m tired of it.”
Her friend nodded in agreement and added, “This used to be a nice neighborhood.”
I was taken aback by their conversation, but thought that it might spur some worthwhile discussion. Are there more panhandlers in the neighborhood now than there used to be? Is the area on D Street NW between 7th and 8th becoming a problem? Will an increase in homeless/panhandlers keep people away from the best PQ has to offer?

Fun Fair Protest Set For Next Week
Fun Fair Video at 919 5th Street is getting some attention these days. It was a discussion item at this week’s DNA meeting. It was on WJLA Channel 7’s website (we’d embed the video but the new WJLA site doesn’t allow it). It’s up on the Mount Vernon Neighborhood Association website. And, it will be the object of a nieghborhood protest (see the flyer shown above).
This business is just north of the PQ and is near the under construction Safeway anticipated to open next year. The organizing meeting is tonight and the protest is set for next Monday, September 17th.

WJLA Channel 7 News – Residents to Hold a Rally to Close Fun Fair
The rally was also profiled on the evening of the 17th on WTTG Channel 5’s Edge which is their 11 pm news broadcast and WRC Channel 4’s 11 pm broadcast.
Progress Reports: Madame Tussauds & Zara
Two works in progress for F ST have made some changes recently. Madame Tussauds has added a sign (gold, top of building) as well as a banner (in red below sign–both easier to see if you click the image to view the full photo) to their soon to open downtown location. The banner hanging shows a date of October 2007.
Zara recently tore down the black construction wall with the large ad, and have begun what looks to be refinishing the sidewalk. That sidewalk used to be open to pedestrian traffic, but now you have to walk on the South side of F ST as the North side is enclosed in chain link fencing (photo below).
