About.com profiles neighborhoods in US cities. Of the eight DC neighborhoods listed, one is Chinatown and the other is the Penn Quarter. Two quotes that struck this blogger…”Much of the area was torn down in the 1990s to make way for the MCI Center (now the Verizon Center).” and another is that this area is “a revitalized arts and entertainment district.” An outsider reading these snippets might think that no one lives downtown and that it is purely a destination. Us PQ residents will continue to have to set visitors, DC government officials and other DC residents straight on that account.
Segway Rental Outlet Replaces Young’s Deli At 9th & G (624 9th St NW)
Forget Flex/ZipCar! You can see the Segways lined up on the sidewalk outside of the new Segway rental store. The wire frame over the doorway is all that is left of Young’s Deli. We should also note that this building is for sale, so it may be possible that Young’s saw the writing on the wall and closed up shop and moved elsewhere.

Penn Ave Circa 1905
While in NYC a few weeks ago at a flea market on the west side, we couldn’t resist picking up this postcard of Penn Ave with a view from 15th Street towards the Capitol building. The message reads “Greetings Oct 5th ’05” and both the Willard Hotel and the “Old” Post Office Building (then only 6 years old) can be seen. The postage needed to send the card? 1 penny.
