An article on Franchise Wire talks about the first three US versions of Vapiano – an Italian restaurant based in Germany. These first locations are all in the DC area: Ballston, 18th & M, and 623 H St.

This restaurant is interesting because pastas are to be made fresh, on-site. Also, we’re curious to see if the ordering & paying procedures will mirror those of the Germany-based restaurants.

Used Book/CD Sale At IBEW (900 7th St NW) On April 13th
Tra wrote in to let us know that a used book/cd sale will be hosted on the 1st floor of the IBEW building (900 7th St NW). Tra also notes that all proceeds will benefit the D.C. Public Schools and most of the used books and cd’s will be priced between $1 and $4 – now that’s a bargain!

The sixth annual Carpe Librum used book sale will open its doors on Friday, April 13th at 8am at 900 7th Street, NW!! Thank you to IBEW and Akridge for donating this fabulous sale site to us for the second year in a row!!

DC Taxi Fare Calculator

The Sidewalk Cafe That You’ll Never Know (720 I St NW)
This weeks Historic Preservation Review Board approved permit list had one interesting item:

720 I St NW is the location of the New World Cafe. You may not really know of the cafe because it’s only open on weekdays and Saturdays 6:30am-1:30pm (i.e. for the office crowd).
It’s nice to see some sidewalk seating sprout up in the neighborhood, but it would also be nice to see some that are open in the evening!
We’ve been eyeing the deserted sidewalks of 8th St NW between G and H. Those sidewalks are probably the widest we’ve ever seen and have a great view of the Donald W. Reynolds Center (Smithsonian American Art museum). It would be the perfect setting for some sidewalk bars – especially since no residential units are on that block. The future home of Proof (701 8th St NW/775 G St NW) is set to occupy just a tiny fraction of that space – it is supposed to open this month.
