Wizards Wand A Bit Broken

With just over 20 games to go in the season, the Wizards are showing everyone their magic as they sit atop the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference. Although one might argue they are in the weakest divison of the conference, Arenas continues his on the floor leadership of the team in the number three slot for overall points per game (Denver’s Carmelo Anthony is first). Caron Butler’s and Antwan Jamison’s injuries combined with Arenas’ flagging output mean the Wizards will have to wave their wand at their defense to win games. We know that Eddie Jordan has his hometown behind him and that once the Wizards get their primary scorers back, they can attempt to halt their recent losing streak. Tonight’s game against cellar dweller Atlanta at the Phone Booth is a perfect opportunity to put one in the win column.

Madame Tussauds & National Law Enforcement Officers Museum Info

Thanks to the multitude of readers who pointed us to the WaPo’s articles on Madame Tussauds (corner of 10th and F St NW) and the National Law Enforcement Officers Museum (E St NW between 4th & 5th St).

dcgarbs posted a link to some renderings of the NLEO Museum (shown at the top of this post).

Andy commented on Madam Tussaud’s expected admission fee of $25 (with several exclamation points).

Ovechkin: A 100 Pointer In Our Midst

It’s time to turn our attention to the two teams that play at the Verizon Center (aka “The Phone Booth”) and we’ll start with the Washington Capitals, a team that finds itself 14th out of 15th in the Eastern Conference and in the Southeast Division basement. The offense is working but the defense needs help as the team offers up one of the highest goals against number in the league.

A bright spot, of course, is number eight – Alex Ovechkin. Not since Mike Gartner and Denis Maruk graced the frozen pond at the Capital Centre in the ’80s have the Caps had a 100 pointer in their midst. We now have one in the form of the 6 foot 2 inch left winger who played for Dynamo Moscow in the Russian Super League. Ovechkin is a franchise player and a balanced scorer but with the worst plus-minus ratio, is he the backstop that prevents the Caps from being an outright door mat? Time will tell. One matter stands true, however, and it is that the Caps will have to figure out how to let fewer pucks in the net and win in overtime. Both accomplishments are always a team effort.

P.S. We have to give an honorable mention to Bobby Carpenter who started with the Caps at age 18 and got close to 100 points in the ’84-’85 season. That season he had 95 points eclipsing the 50 goal mark by 3 goals.

P.P.S. The Caps lost in a shootout last night to Florida, 6-5.

Gallery Place/Penn Quarter Building Permit Update (After Hours Work & St Patty’s Day Prep)

We’re concerned about the first update because 627 H St NW (former China Doll building) is supposed to be razed. The public space permit probably means that the sidewalk on that side of H St NW will be closed. And add “after hours work” on top of that and we’re wondering what this all means for residents across the street.

Other than that, we have the Irish Channel Restaurant & Pub (bottom floor of the Red Roof Inn) getting ready to set up some tents on St. Patrick’s Day.
