Fran sends us this excellent summary of the newly opened Rocket Bar (714 7th St NW):
- It is a pool hall done by the owners of Atomic Billiards and Bedrock Billiards. It is a bar bar, no food served but you can take your own in. They have a full bar as well as 4 pool tables, 2 shuffle puck games, 3 dart boards and a tabletop video game with old school games on it. It is a laidback bar open til 3am so a good place for the last drink. It is already getting crowded. Male dominated crowd. It is just a door leading into the basement, next to Ruby Tuesdays.
This blogger has visited the bar and I can attest to the laid-back, neighborhood-bar atmosphere and good prices: Beer is about $5/pint and pool is $12/hour. Pool is charged in 5 minute increments, so if you only use 30 minutes, it’s $6.

My girlfriend & I stopped by on Sunday, late afternoon. Thought the place was a great addition to the neighborhood. The bar is big (there are actually 2 bars, but the second smaller one wasn’t open), lots of tables, games, etc… Had a few pints and played connect four against my girlfriend (won 4 games to 2, but who’s counting?). Good beers, they do serve mixed drinks. They don’t serve food at the moment but said they were looking to partner with a local restaurant, and right now they’ll let you bring food in from any where you like.
Also lots of big, pretty tv’s. Only complaint was they didn’t have sound or closed captioning on for the simpsons when we were in there. Hard to read cartoon lips.

Was up at the Rocket Bar this weekend – awesome place. Totally not a Lucky Strike (take all your money place), in fact I think they’re exactly opposite of that.
Shuffle board is awesome and rumor has it – they’re getting a sit-down ms. pac-man game.

the mixed drinks were in the same price range as the wines…about $6-8. one of the bartenders said they were looking to hook up with Ruby Tuesday’s for food options.
it was a nice, low- key and casual place. i don’t think you’ll forget the bright green hallway on your way down to the bar.

Hung out there last night with the fellas. A great “neighborhood” bar without all the pretentiousness of a Lucky Strike or Indie Blue. Drinks reasonably priced and a great atmosphere. I can’t wait until the jukebox starts cranking.
Own A Piece Of The Neighborhood’s Past – 10th & G St Church Auction
After the 10th & G St NW church announced their redevelopment plans while complaining about outdated facilities, we were surprised to find this auction item:
- Newly Installed Commercial Kitchen
Location: 945 G Street NW, Washington, DC 20001
Brief Description:
1st Congressional [sic] Church has relocated its social services in anticipation of its site redevelopment and new construction. The church will make a complete liquidation of all excess assets including its newly installed commercial kitchen.
Kind of makes you wonder why a church undergoes redevelopment if it just got a brand new commercial kitchen, hunh?
Construction Zone Alert: 709-11 D St NW (Union Hardware Building) *Updated*

The old Union Hardware Building (709-711 D St NW) is about to become a construction zone, according to a Feb 22 approval by the DC Historic Preservation Review Board.
Here is the full verbiage on the HPRB vote:
- 709-11 D Street NW, HPA #06-386, non-contributing demolition, alteration, addition.
The staff report recommending the Review Board approve the alterations to the building at 709 D Street and the demolition of the non-contributing building at 711 D Street and its replacement with a new five-story building be approved with the following conditions and delegate final approval to staff: (1) the design of the storefront should be revised, with the base raised and the storefront projecting and angled; (2) the cornice above the first floor should project out to a greater depth; (3) the treatment of the windows in the portion of the façade above the main entrance should be restudied; (4) the number of openings in the interior to allow for connections between the two buildings should be reduced in order to preserve as much of the original structure of 709; and (5) the treatment and location of the rooftop penthouse structure should be restudied, with the penthouse pushed back in order for its visual impact to be reduced as much as possible. Vote 7-0

Washington Improv Theater Starts 2007 Season At Flashpoint
As of yesterday, our neighborhood’s very own Washington Improv Theater kicked off its 2007 season at Flashpoint’s Mead Theatre Lab (916 G St NW). Check out the list of 9 separate performances for this season.
If you’re not familiar with Washington Improv Theater, it’s all about audience participation and watching some home-grown comedy – no two shows are alike. WIT performances are on Thursday – Saturday and ticket prices range from $10-12.
