RSS FeedMore Air Rights News: Center Leg Freeway
A couple of days ago, we wrote about how the District’s Office of Planning is in the midst of redefining Downtown DC, calling it Center City. One of their Center City Action Agenda items is to develop air rights all around the city.
In the comments section of that post, Chris mentioned that a “portion of the Center Leg Freeway (I-395 North), across from Georgetown Law, was awarded to a developer named Conrad Monts […] back in the late 80’s by the Barry administration. Nothing happened and the District sued to get it back. Not sure what the status is now.” Center Leg Freeway is on the eastern boarder of our neighborhood.
We dug around and found that the Civil Litigation Division of the Office of the Attorney General DC had the following juicy success (page 20 – pdf) in March 7, 2005:
- In Washington Development Group, the District regained title to the air rights over the I-395 tunnel, ending years of dispute over who has the right to develop this valuable property. While that case remains on appeal, the District is well-positioned to preserve the trial court’s ruling.
On another note, did anyone know that the city was interested in developing the air rights around I-66/Lincoln Kennedy Center?

Happy Birthday To Us! Gallery Place Living Is One Year Old Today
So, that makes us something like 70 years old in Internet time, right?

New Theme For Condo Developers: Dirty Little Secrets
The Washington Business Journal has an article from February 2, 2007 about a new development in Arlington, VA. It’s called The Club on Quincy.
You can visit The Club on Quincy’s website, and you can read the blurbs about the development on development tracking websites. But, what none of them will tell you (but the WaBizJournal does) is that this development is built on a site with a Funeral Home:
- Luxury residential builder plans to redevelop a site in Virginia , where there’s been a spurt of new construction. The Reston division of WCI Communities has proposed a 124-unit condominium complex on what’s now the Arlington Funeral Home property on North Fairfax Drive.
The article goes on to say that the funeral home will be made part of the site and that they are marketing the homes to the higher-end buyers . . . sound familiar?
Our neighborhood has a similarly interesting/eerie (depending on your point of view) development where condos will be built on top of a church and soup kitchen and marketed to higher-end buyers. This project doesn’t yet have a name or a website – but we’re going to place a bet that the marketing materials will look similar to The Club on Quincy’s.

Public Service Announcement: Fitness Club Locker Room Security
Remember high school gym locker rooms where you feared putting anything valuable in the locker because just about anyone could break/manipulate your lock and run away with your belongings? Apparently, the same still holds true with Gallery Place area fitness centers.
Check out some of these crimewatch reports. Moral of the story: Don’t bring anything too valuable with you to the gym or demand more locker room security from your fitness center.
