As most readers may know, the power went out in Gallery Place at about 8:30pm last night – during the busiest part of the evening. Residents were left frustrated until 1:15am when power was finally restored. GPLiving personally observed the Residences At Gallery Place, 6th Street Flats, and The Cosmopolitan without power.
It was particularly frustrating to look at surrounding streets only 1-2 blocks away with full power!

- I was having dinner at Clyde’s last evening with my father. Just when I gave our waitress my credit card to pay the bill, the lights went out and the fire alarm started blaring. After looking out onto 7th St. we noticed patrons of other eateries were pouring out the doors. BLACKOUT! The manager of Clyde’s began informing each table that we had to leave. Nonetheless, they weren’t able to run credit cards so a whole lot of people ate free last evening…including me. Don’t worry I took care of the waitress with a lovely tip. Power was not restored in my building (Residences at Gallery Place) until 1:30 AM.
Putting The "Gallery" Back In Gallery Place *Updated*
An exclusive party took place last night at the Old Patent Office building in Gallery Place. 1300 guests attended the first opening of the Smithsonian American Art & Portrait Gallery in several years. Read more about it!

- What is the Reynolds Center?
The Smithsonian American Art Museum and the National Portrait Gallery are located in a National Historic Landmark building at the heart of Washington’s vibrant new downtown, a few blocks from the National Mall. Both museums open on July 1. Collectively, the two museums and their activities are known as the Donald W. Reynolds Center for American Art and Portraiture. The National Portrait Gallery and the Smithsonian American Art Museum tell America’s stories through art, history and biography.
Update: Residents will be very happy to know that the hours of the Reynolds Center will be 11:30 a.m.-7:00 p.m. daily! It’ll be easy to stop by after work.
Two New Restaurants/Bars And A Deli Coming To Gallery Place!
Maisha has been our unofficial lookout on the corner of 8th and F G Streets. First, she emailed us about a deli that is currently building out the interior at 703 (?) 8th St NW. It will be called 1791 DC – A Gourmet Delicatessen.
Next, Maisha told us about a liquor license posting on another window of the same building (called the Portrait building). This restaurant (701 8th St NW) will be called Vignette and it appears to be a piano bar, with American cuisine, and includes a sidewalk cafe (56 seats) directly across the street from the Smithsonian museum – great location!
As GPLiving was walking around the Gallery Place complex this weekend, we noticed yet another liquor license application. This one is on the East-side door of the G Street alley that leads to/from 6th street (not as frequently traveled as the 7th street side). It looks like a bar, called Bar Louie (701 7th St NW), that will be opening somewhere in the Gallery Place complex. We think it will be on the first floor closest to the door where the liquor license is posted. We guess that Bar Louie is part of this chain. We’re curious about the proposed Summer Garden, which is supposed to feature 80 seats, because there isn’t any space for an outdoor garden in the near vicinity!
To top things off, we snapped a pic of the other side of the Smithsonian American Art Museum & Portrait Gallery currently taking shape! The building is now illuminated during the nighttime.
Gallery Place’s Coyote Ugly To Change Venues Later This Year
We’ve received an unconfirmed report that Coyote Ugly (717 6th St NW) will be changing venues later this year. Here is the scoop:
- We expect that by the end of the summer, the Coyote Ugly sign will be gone, the front facade cleaned, and the inside renovated to become a local bar with food, music, and lots of flat-screen TV’s for sports.
