Residents Left Without Power In Gallery Place (Blackout Stories Requested!)
As most readers may know, the power went out in Gallery Place at about 8:30pm last night – during the busiest part of the evening. Residents were left frustrated until 1:15am when power was finally restored. GPLiving personally observed the Residences At Gallery Place, 6th Street Flats, and The Cosmopolitan without power.
It was particularly frustrating to look at surrounding streets only 1-2 blocks away with full power!
NBC has more details here. Did we miss any other residences that lost power?
Update: Tracy emailed us with an excellent suggestion! Why don’t we collect blackout stories?! Please email (gpliving -at- gmail.com) or post your stories in the comments section. Here’s Tracy’s story:
- I was having dinner at Clyde’s last evening with my father. Just when I gave our waitress my credit card to pay the bill, the lights went out and the fire alarm started blaring. After looking out onto 7th St. we noticed patrons of other eateries were pouring out the doors. BLACKOUT! The manager of Clyde’s began informing each table that we had to leave. Nonetheless, they weren’t able to run credit cards so a whole lot of people ate free last evening…including me. Don’t worry I took care of the waitress with a lovely tip. Power was not restored in my building (Residences at Gallery Place) until 1:30 AM.

Well, GPLiving and Gal were at home cooking a wonderful dinner: steak with a mushroom sauce and bleu cheese (Cowgirl Creamery variety, at that!), and a side of asparagus. Gal just flipped the steaks in the skillet – only three more minutes of cooking left. Then, power goes out! We’re left with a pan full of half-cooked steaks and mushrooms soaking up 1/4 cup of wine for over an hour! We finally gave up, put everything in tupperware, and drove over to another residence to finish cooking our feast.
Mass Court and 400 Mass were also without power. The power went out then within 30 minutes, two firetrucks and police were on scene at the corner of 3rd and H where the historic building connected to Mass Court had reported a fire. No fire alarms went off inside Mass Court however, a bit concerning. Residents were on the street for 20 – 30 minutes. Which was fine since no one had power anyway. I spent the better part of the evening on the roof of Mass Court with a lot of other residents who were swimming in the pool and cooking their food on the grills rather than have it spoil in their fridge. It was actually a pleasant evening considering there was no air conditioning.
I was throwing a cocktail party in the party room of Gallery Place; I went down to the lobby with a ginger-infused Ketel One martini in my hand to check on more guests. Went back into the elevator myself and was thrown into total blackness. I was trying to hit the right bottom–ALARM; when the whole elevator started to shake. I thought I bought it, if ya know what I mean. All of a sudden the lights came back on; i hit that alarm bottom and pressed Lobby and down I went; the elevator wouldn’t open for a few minutes and finally with a wildly beating heart I stepped into the Lobby to hear about the blackout.
My girl’s place at 555 Mass. Ave. was without power as well. So we headed to my place at the Lafayette and fortunately it was fine.
I’m a Mass Court resident. I had just popped a pizza (thin whole wheat crust, grilled peppers & onions, garlic–delish!) into the oven and opened a bottle of wine when darkness fell. The Mrs. & I were thankful for two things: we had tons of candles and opening bottles of wine does not require electricity.
We at the Clara Barton (616 E) luckily escaped this time! Our power was seemingly unaffected. One of my friends at 777 7th called me on her cell phone to tell me her power was out and to ask if we had power. That’s the only way I found out about it.
the Lafayette and Clara Barton had power but now it explains why I couldn’t head down 7th Street after returning from Columbia last night. the police blocked 6th, 7th and any street that lead into the MCI Center Square (where the screen is). I thought there might be an extra large/rowdy event at the MCI Center and police were clearing the streets…
Those of you in 400 Mass, Quincy Park, Gallery Place and the like–were your managers there? Did they come?
Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
Yeah–those of us on the fringe of Gallery Place on 10th St. lost power too! It only affected some of the buildings on our block, so we were equally frustrated.
