Permit Activity: Union Station Bicycle Transit Center
This week, we don’t have any major building permits to report in the Penn Quarter. But, we did find an interesting mention of the planned bicycle transit center at Union Station. DDOT got an approval for erosion control and the Federal project is exempt from all other DCRA permits.
We’re anticipating (and hoping) that a new SmartBike location will open up at the Union Station bicycle transit center, giving Penn Quarter residents another option to getting to the train station and catching that Acela. The bike ride would start at our 8th & F St NW SmartBike location and would end right in front of Union Station’s doors at the southwest corner of the building.
SmartBike sent out a survey a few days ago asking customers to rank potential additional sites for bike kiosks. On the list was Union Station. Other sites included Columbia Heights and H St NE (Atlas District). Missing from the survey was any mention of extending operating hours – currently, the kiosk closes at 10pm, which eliminates any potential for a return trip from an outing.

from past entries regarding needing locks for round trips to the grocery store, people should write-in smart bike locations for grocery stores and other commercial areas.
