Ping Pong Dim Sum DC Opens Today (900 7th St NW)
Since June of 2009, we’ve watched the Washington DC incarnation of Ping Pong Dim Sum (900 7th Street NW) go from an empty space to an alcohol application to a fully built out restaurant. This United Kingdom based dumpling restaurant makes its DC area debut in the Penn Quarter today at 11:30 am joining Nando’s and Vapiano as the latest import to open in the neighborhood. The opening of Ping Pong now extends 7th Street’s “restaurant row” above I (Eye) Street NW and you can follow this location’s happenings via their Twitter page. The sample menus below will give you a feel for the cuisine and if you dine there, let us know what you think of the DC area’s newest Asian themed culinary stop.

Had a chance to try it today!
What a treat for a lazy sunday or a fun evening!
What DC was missing!!!
Loved it!

I agree. The caipirinha cocktail was rather tasty. The decor is modern and yet cozy with the mood lighting and different areas to make it feel more cozy. One caution is that the food came out very quickly (which is good), so I would suggest at first ordering 3-4 dishes and then more as needed to prevent a n overflowing table with food. The dishes come in ‘threes’, so if you order 1 dumpling dish, you get three dumplings, which is fun if you don’t mind splitting one dumpling with your partner (if you’re a party of two). I would strongly suggest the spicy basil dumpling, any of the puffs, chive dumpling, spicy pork dumpling and the sticky rice wrapped in a Lotus leaf. No need for the sauce platter – most dishes come with their own sauce. The only thing we didn’t care for was the water chestnut & cabbage side.
Went for lunch. The set-price menu is affordable — $15 — and really delicious. I have been eating dim, sum since the 70s (my dad used to take me to a place on Eye Street between 7 and 6) — and the food at Ping Pong is fresh, bright in flavor, and really nicely prepared. YUM! A very welcome addition!
I tried the following this evening…
* pork puff
* coriander dumpling
* one of the fried rolls (can’t remember now)
* seafood sticky rice
* lychee and ginger ice tea
no complaints. will be going back.
I tried the lunch and while I’ve never had Dim Sum before I try new things as often as I can. It was okay but I was not impressed, the seafood lunch special was a good deal but the fillings tasted much the same in many of the pieces. I liked the decor and the service was good. I’ll try it for happy hour, the drinks look like they’d be delicious.
Just returned from living in London for several years – Ping Pong is a popular chain there. It’s pretty decent and fun to go to as well. Their drinks are pretty tasty. I am curious to see how the pricing will differ here.
There are many more dim sum options in London than DC, so less competition may mean better deals!
Glad to see it here!!

DC desperately needs a dim sum spot. I hope it is half way decent. There is of course Oriental East off the red line in Silver Spring, but it would be nice to have another option. This places looks awfully fancy from the outside for a dim sum joint.
