Police Acknowledgment Of Downtown Residents

Posted by pqresident
August 22, 2007

The recent weekend’s post on the PQ’s crime statistics and resulting discussion brought to our attention safety concerns on 5th Street between Massachusetts Avenue and K Street. In reviewing the DC Metropolitan Police Department’s (MPD) First District police station locations on line, we noticed some interesting wording on their homepage describing the community they serve.

Because it has both a district station and a substation, the First District is divided operationally into two areas: west and east. The western part of the district includes the US Capitol (House, Senate), the White House, Federal Triangle, the downtown business district (including the Convention Center and the Verizon Center), Chinatown and the waterfront. Most residences in this area are in the Southwest quadrant near the waterfront, although there is a growing resident population in such “downtown” communities as Penn Quarter.

We appreciate that downtown (and Penn Quarter) residents are given a nod in the last sentence (bolded by PQ Living). It demonstrates a growing MPD awareness of our community. With approximately 1150 new residential units within the east part of the Downtown BID [2006 Q4 Development Activity Report (PDF)] and 1550 new units in the Mt. Vernon Triangle area coming on line in the next two to three years, an influx of at least 3000 to 4000 more downtown citizens will need MPD service. We hope Commander Groomes and Chief Lanier are getting their corps ready.

I’d like to give a shout out to the officer who chased down and tackled a drug dealer yesterday after work in front of 555. Keep it coming!!!!!

And little mouse that is Mt. Vernon Triangle — keep on roaring.

Thanks pqresident for the additional post and attention.

Wow!!!! That is great to hear, sounds like our concerns are being heard… I don’t understand why this hasn’t been happening all along. Thanks MPD officer!!!!

That’s the type of news I like to here. Now if only we could tackle and beat the sh*t out of them.
