Ward 2/ANC 2C & 2F Election Guide *updated*

Posted by pqresident
October 31, 2008

Ed. Note: We added a few condo/apartment buildings to the ANC/SMD listings below the third paragraph per reader suggestions. We added two links to the linkset at the bottom of the “What’s going on in ANC2C?” section.

Following up on our Ward 6/ANC 6C election guide is this longer Ward 2/ANC 2C & 2F election guide. We’re going local with the Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) elections and the associated Single Member Districts (SMDs) for downtown so that you can make an informed choice at the polls next Tuesday, November 4. If you live downtown, you live in Ward 2 or Ward 6 and we already posted about Ward 6 so this post is about Ward 2. Check after the break for more…

What ANC and SMD do I live in?

You may want to start with the citywide map here [caution: large PDF] to figure out what ward you live in if you don’t know already. If you know you’re in Ward 2, check the Ward 2 Section C & F map [PDF] to get a better feeling for which ANC and Single Member District is yours. ANC 2F has its own website and Kevin Chapple, ANC 2C02 Commissioner, has a website about ANC 2C. If you live downtown and you don’t live in Ward 6, then you live in Ward 2.

(NOTE: We did not link to the Board of Elections and Ethics ANC 2C map because it’s…ahem…missing a few SMD labels and we find it confusing that every ANC map on the BOEE website is labelled ANC 02 followed by the actual ANC such as 2C or 6C. Thus, Ward 6′s ANC 6C map is labelled ANC 02 – 6C. Confused? We sure were.)

SMDs for downtown condos and apartment buildings in Ward 2:

2C03 – The Artisan, Gallery Place Residences, Mather Studios, McCollough Courts, Terrell Place, The Ventana, The Washington Apartments, The Whitman, Mount Vernon Plaza Apartments
2F03 – The Desoto (1300 Mass Ave), The Alta, The Woodward Apartments, The Midtown (1312 Mass Ave), The Grant, 1210 Mass Apartments, Massachusetts House Apartments
2F06 – 1150 K Street, 1010 Mass Ave

(this is not necessarily a complete list and commenters are free to add buildings in the comments)

Who’s running for Ward 2 Councilmember?

There are two people on the ballot for Ward 2 Councilmember – Christina Culver is the Republican candidate and Jack Evans is the Democratic candidate. Jack Evans is the incumbent Ward 2 Councilmember.

Who’s running for SMD commissioner?

In Ward 2, there are 3 SMDs that might be of interest to our readers: 2C03, 2F03 and 2F06. These are the folks who will be preprinted on the ballot in each of these SMDs [PDF] as follows (websites are linked):

2C03 – Jessica Lanza, Doris Brooks (Chairwoman and incumbent)
2F03 – Brian Vargas
2F06 – Michael Benardo (incumbent)

Where do I find my polling place?

Check the DCBOEE’s online Polling Place Locator or you can check the Ward 2 polling place precinct map [PDF] to find out.

I’ve heard lots of stories about ANC 2C. What’s going on?

We suggest you do your own research and come to your own conclusions. There are a number of resources we’ll point you to as follows to get you on your way. These links include the Downtown Neighborhood Association (a civic association focusing on downtown matters), the CityPaper, the Mount Vernon Square Neighborhood Association’s blog, the ANC2C02 website and personal/neighborhood oriented blogs.

I live on the other side of New Jersey so I’m in Ward 5 not 2 and am desperately trying to find some information about the Board of Ed and ANC5C01 candidates–anyone know of any websites that have any info other than their names?

Comment by Si Kailian on October 31, 2008 @ 9:53 am

Here is a letter I sent earlier this year which has it in a nutshell:
http://www.box.net/shared/rdfjfcs1fh
and btw I got NOTHING back from our esteemed politicians.

the MVSNA blog also has a search function where anyone interested can easily read all about ANC 2C.

Doris Brooks & Barbara Curtis are absentee commissioners who do nothing and vote how Leroy Thorpe directs them to. They havent bothered to attend any ANC campaign forums or community meetings. Please vote for JESSICA LANZA (2C03) and THERESA SULE (2C04).

The Grant and the DeSoto are in 2F03– Common! the 1312 Mass building is IN BETWEEN them!

Mount Vernon Place Apartments are in 2C03

Thank you for reminding Ward 2 voters who live downtown about the importance of the ANC races. Another Shaw blog which has expressed an opinion about the candidates is

Is someone willing to post a list of what buildings are in what ANC? There is a LOT of confusion — even I am confused as to which ANC I am in (Mather Building). This will go a long way to help PQL readers better identify which election they should follow.

If you are physically able to do so, vote using the paper ballot so, in the event of any close local race or vote-counting controversy (like those in the DC Sept. 9, 2008 Primary Election), a full and accurate recount would be possible.

Maryland and Virginia are doing away with touch screen voting after this election, and maybe the District of Columbia should do the same.

Comment by pqresident on November 2, 2008 @ 3:50 pm

Jon – if you’re in the Mather Studios then you’re in ANC 2C, SMD (Single Member District) 03 or 2C03. the list can be found below the third paragraph of this story.

The Starbucks on K between 7th and 8th NW (across from Carnegie Library) is NOT giving out free coffee — only the 7th and H St. NW store. No truth in advertising. Not all the stores are participating.
