Smithsonian Reynold’s Center Crane Comes Down – Sidewalk Opening Soon?
We took the PQ Living helicopter up on Saturday and found workers busy dismantling the Smithsonian Reynold’s Center crane. This crane was used to construct the courtyard roof. It makes us wonder how soon the sidewalk at the corner of 9th & F St will be open?

When that short stretch of sidewalk opens, it will make my daily commute better. No longer will I have to do the dreaded F Street double cross on the way to the Metro, or alternatively slug my way through the crowds on the Red Line platform to get to the Green Line platform. All we need are a few feet of space, so if the construction crew would pull their fences back just a smidge, it’d be much appreciated!
those fences are one of the seemingly “little” things that i think will really change the look of the neighborhood to have that wide sidewalk open all the way down – can’t wait.
OH WOW, the number of closed sidewalks in the DC Area due to construction is staggering. I wonder if there are any restrictions on this by the DC government, because I find sometime entire blocks on both sides blocked off.
This of course happened last week in the rain!

#6 – I know – i often think to myself that they manage to build 60 story buildings in Manhattan with less collateral damage and street closings than when they build a 7 story office building in DC.
walls will not come down until Dec 24, earliest. Other end of Smithsonian sidewalk will soon have Downtown Holiday Market on it. Dec 7-23.

The courtyard opens to the public Nov 18 (friends & family celebration). My sources tell me that the Smithsonian isn’t guaranteeing that the sidewalk will be free of construction equipment until mid-December. Let’s hope it is sooner.
